Black Sandy State Park

Story

Black Sandy State Park, located 15mi north of Helena, Montana, in Lewis and Clark County, is a Montana state park on the shores of Hauser Lake, which is formed by Hauser Dam. The dam, at an elevation of 3835ft, was built in the early 1900s and named after former governor Samuel Thomas Hauser. The park is along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1805. Prior to 1980, Montana Power Company owned the land and operated the park as a recreation area. In 1980, Montana Power turned over management of the park to Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP). In 1982, it was designated a state recreation area. Later on the land was also turned over to FWP.Recreational activities available at the park include: hiking, tent camping (four sites), RV camping (29 sites), swimming, picnic areas, fishing for kokanee salmon and trout, boating, and water skiing. Dogs are allowed. The maximum stay allowed is seven days. There are summertime campfire programs. The state park reservation system recently adopted an internet-based reservation system. In February 2012, a prefabricated concrete office building was proposed to replace a wooden 8x building with a 16x concrete building, with internet access. The new building is projected to cost $40,000.

Well maintained, reasonably priced campground. A couple of miles of dirt roads coming in. Make sure to fill your water tank at the dump station before you get to the campground. Good 50 amp electric and bathrooms are clean. Lovely sites right on the river. BUT they are so close together we couldn’t put out our awnings. Very popular spot for local families to bring their boats.
A very nice little state park. Well maintained and with necessary facilities for tents, RV, boat docks/ramp, and swimming. RV spaces are 2 per space. There is AC power, water and a dump station for the traditional fee of $5.00. Additional parking is available. Volunteer staff were courteous and friendly. We never did see the park store open, but that may be a ‘seasonal’ thing.nnDriving into the park, be careful of the downhill, gravel roads. You could very easily loose control coming down into the parks. Also, there is a narrow road past the park that will take you to Hauser Dam.nnThe park is convenient for visiting Helena, The Gates of the Mountains, and other river related facilities.nnOne final word, it’s beautiful to walk up to the overlook in the morning and see the sunrise with fish jumping around the lake.
This is more of a RV camping and parking area than a great picnic spot although there are tables and fire rings. There are restrooms in a fairly new building. There is also a boat ramp and docks. On this day in late September there were still several RVs although not many people out and about. It's not a terribly scenic or wild area although the lake is nice. It's not a good swimming area. Dogs have to be leashed. Hiking trails weren't obvious. The picnic areas might be hard for wheelchair access because they are hills.
Our family stayed here a while ago, in our trailer. It was our maiden voyage, and we needed to figure out how the trailer was, and what we might need for longer trips, etc..nnFirst off Black Sandy is a great location, we had a spot literally right on the water in front of the ropes swimming area, and my girls had a blast swimming and enjoying themselves. We had a campfire and roasted marshmallows and enjoyed our time.nnWe had power for our trailer, but I took one star off because there was no water or dump station. The main thing we figured out on this trip was that with two adults and three children, Water is a 100% must. We actually ran out of water in the evening late, and since we only lived a mile away, we drove home. Now we only go where there is full service of electricity, water, and a dump station.nnFor anyone else, though, that doesn’t have so many people, this is an ideal place to take a small vacation and we recommend it highly if you don’t need a water connection.
This was a fantastic find. We had a reservation at a different rv park and it was not one we would stay at, so we took a chance and even at dusk the camp host gave us some options of what was leftonly 3 spots and it was back in right next to the lake and beautiful. No water or sewage but nice bathroom. Would be an awesome place to stay longer as long as you have your own water.
