Bighorn National Forest

About

The Bighorn National Forest's Facebook page is a combined effort of the National Forest Foundation and the USDA Forest Service.

Story

The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193 million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the national forests. www.nationalforests.org/

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000-employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife.

Mission

The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
The Forest Service motto, "Caring for the land and serving people," captures the spirit of our mission.

I love the Bighorns! I go camping here with my family pretty much every year, and it's always great. If you love pine trees and grassy meadows, it's incredible. I think it's on par with camping in Yellowstone, but you don't have to deal with the crowds. Our campground had only one other spot taken on a Thursday night, and I only remember passing five or so cars on my way through. I highly recommend camping here, but please don't tell too many people about it :)

Went through the Big Horn at different locations on our way to/from South Dakota. The roads are in good shape, the views are awesome! Ample look out pull offs. Places for snow mobiles, camping, hiking, cycling, rock climbing... Lots to do!

Wonderful place for family camping. Please don't come visit and ruin it for us. No, I didn't mean that, we have met some great people there, and look forward to meeting you there!

Awesome piece of land, pics are from the edge of the bighorn after miles of hiking. Sights like no other place... must see in the summer/spring as well as winter (below freezing 200 days a year). Enjoy!

Beautifully wild. Trails in the meadows were well marked. Parts of the trails up to Cloud Peak are difficult to find and are strenuous. A lot of the trails are shared by those on horseback, so there is a lot of manure. Be sure to read the rules and regulations regarding fire and waste before visiting so that you can adequately prepare. Trout can be found in the lakes which are so clear you can see to the bottom. There were a lot of beautiful wildflowers in late July. A lot of chipmunks and a few marmots. I didn't see any bear or moose but it doesn't mean they aren't there. There is a sign on the trail from Lily Lake to the Battle Park trail that says you have 1/4 a mile left but it's more like .7 miles. There are latrines at the check in station for Battle Park where you also register for your back country pass. Misty Moon Lake was pretty popular.
