About

Beyond the Blue Box is a registered Charity. We have been in operation since 1992.

Story

Founded 22 years ago with the twin objectives of diverting waste and offering developmentally challenged individuals work opportunities, BBB has blossomed into an environmental success story and surpassed every criterion its founders set.

Today, more than a million pounds of waste is diverted from our landfills every year.

From one paid staff person, we now employ 11 full-time staff and provide work experience for 15 developmentally challenged individuals; of whom
five are full-time, five are part time and five are high school students. Over 15 years, in close co-operation with the West Northumberland Community Living, we have helped more than 45 people participate in a work environment.

We have also helped hundreds of young people perform community service under the Community Probation Services program since 2000. .

This past year BBB continued its practice of helping fire victims and women establishing new homes with household items. One hundred families were assisted through referrals of local agencies.

Mission

We are here to provide work, social, and training opportunities for developmentally challenged individuals, while promoting reduction, re-use, and recycling of waste in Northumberland County.

The Xmas shop that is open only for the Xmas season is a great little spot to pick up a wide variety of Xmas decorations at a reasonable price. I drive up from Kingston a few times each Xmas season because they are continually adding more items as space becomes available. Plus it’s fun to shop in the main building for unique items at a fair price. It’s important to remember that the money we spend goes to a great organization. Keep up the great work. Thanks
Lots to see, place was dirty even for a thrift store. Loved all the CDs
I stop by occasionally, You never know what your going to find. They have a little bit of everything. I bought 2 bronze matching lamps and they actually sell lamps by the pound. It was great, l paid like 17 dollars for both. Great place to browse and the staff are amazing! Now open for in store shopping!! If you can, get your vaccine and get out and enjoy yourself!! We deserve it!!
literally the best thrift store i've ever been to
Very reasonably priced. I found silk scarves for $1 each and a blouse for $3. Some parts feel a little dusty and could be better organized.
A wonderful ecologicaly friendly shopping experience. Gently used items sold to benefit a terrific group of people who volunteer their time at the store and learn valuable life skills along the way. Check it out. They also take donations at certain times and days.
What a great place to hunt for "treasures." You never know what you'll find. Friendly people work there. Always fun....new stuff is always arriving, never gets boring. Street parking or in a nearby parking lot. Many second-hand stores on this street. Easy walking distance. Spend some time here.
Has a very wide selection of used items. Me and my family have found some really nice treasures there and we really love to support it because they provide jobs to individuals in supported living situations who would otherwise not be able to find jobs. They have two buildings right next to each other, a second hand shop and a boutique.
Great charity drop off.
Sometimes, on a rare day off I come thrifting downtown in Cobourg... It takes me 3 hours to get there but it's nice to spend the day there... I've found a few nice things for myself in here... unfortunately the last time I was in, I had a very terrible experience. I found something without a price tag... now I know all the thrift stores usually have the policy of no price, no sale... but I often see exceptions happening as it's usually an honest error of the tag coming off. Anyways, I brought a dress up to the counter without a tag and made it aware to the employee right away. A young lady a few years younger than me was servicing me at the counter... and I think she genuinely wanted me to get the piece so she said "I'll call someone over so they can find a price for it right now" She called her superior over, a thin woman, late fifties, shoulder length hair, and the employee asked what the price would be. The superior took one look at how I was dressed, and another look at the piece I had was a costume dress from the 1950s that was more useful for the fabric than being worn for anything but a tattered halloween costume and put it behind the counter whilst saying "we will have to call you and give you a price another time" and I said "I live hours away... I can't just come back and pick it up anytime" and then she replied "we can call you long distance, it's not an issue" ignoring my statement about being unable to just swing by and get it... I had to leave it behind because if I got a call back it would probably be to tell me that it was going to be some exorbitant price that would be unjust to reality... all because I'm dressed nicely and look like I might have more money and can AFFORD to pay more. I felt very unwelcome by her. I'll go back and shop again but I'll think twice before I do. I don't know if I want to contribute to businesses that judge their clientele... I think it's important that some eyes see this experience I had before going.
