We've been driving by Betsy's, always saying we have to stop in sometime and finally did yesterday. Not knowing too much about South African food, they introduced us to some dried meats and my husband loved the biltong! I bought some of the baked goods vla cookies and milk tart and they were great with a cup of coffee. Great customer service! Looking forward to trying the boerewors next time.
Nice spot for fresh baked goods with nice grocery. I had meat pies and bobotie the quality was amazing, lots of great meat products available i am excited to go back and try out more items
What a great find! Their made on site food is great. The meat pies and pockets pasties are excellent and the only place in town I've found yet that makes them with the right crust. Not dry and crunchy like most places but wonderful lightly crispy but still soft crust. Quality ingredients and flavourful. Staff is fantastic too. Friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Recommended whether for a taste of home you've missed or for something new and different to try.
A community of foodies must curate, nurture, cultivate, and celebrate its ethnic culinary diversity or risk becoming a "food desert" with ingredients available only through big box chain stores and the Internet. Betsy's South African Deli is one of those outposts of culinary diversity that absolutely delights me, first for simply existing and having a wide variety of ingredients, packaged foods, and ready-to-eat items available, secondly for celebrating themselves with summertime braai a South African take on what we call BBQ or grilling, and third, for being only a short walk from Whyte Ave and also convenient to the ETS bus system. They even have the much beloved three-legged cast iron potjie, should you want to be making stew the correct South African campfire way! Oh, the memories this visit to Betsy's brought back of our time in SA. On hand are several varieties of borewors sausages ready for your grill and both biltong think jerky and droewors dry sausages for your hand. Always find just what we're looking for and so much more! The new addition of a wonderful baker from SA is a welcome addition for sure. The filled cupcakes are AMAZING!
