Bear Spring Camps

About

An American plan sporting camp located on Great Pond in the heart of the Belgrade Lakes Region. Lake side cabins, sand beach, boating, fishing, tennis.

Story

Bear Spring Camps was established in 1910 by George D. and Alice R. Mosher. The couple moved to Rome from Derby, CT with their two sons, Durwood and Bertram. Originally the property was a farm but by building six cottages and converting a wood shed into a dining area, they were soon ready to rent to families traveling from Boston and New York by train. In those days guests were picked up at the Belgrade Depot and transported back to camp. In 1911 Bertram married the girl next door, Irma Richardson and they began to run the family business. As their family grew so did the number of cottages. By 1946 when their only son, Bertram G. Jr. married Marguerite Tobin there were twenty-one cottages. Bert and Marguerite added eleven more cottages, installed indoor plumbing, and expanded the dining area. They continued to run the camps until Bert’s death in 1987 at which time his youngest daughter, Peggy and her husband Ron Churchill took over.

Today the camp continues to operate in the same simple manner as it did in 1910 with lakefront cottages, home cooked meals in the Main House, and families traveling from away to find a few days of old fashioned rest by the lake side.

We enjoyed a week of visiting friends and fishing. The cottages have running hit and cold water and flush toilets. Otherwise, they are quaint rustic lakefront camps. Cabin staff were handy make sure you had what you needed firewood, boats, fuel etc Housing keeping crew tidy up each day. Breakfast and dinner at the lodge is included. The meals were very good. The waitstaff was great. Overall great time. Picture is the view from my porch.
As a family, we have been coming to Bear Spring Camps for the better part of 30 years minus a a few years here and there and this is the most relaxing vacation I could ever ask for. As soon as the lake comes into view, all my stress just melts away. The camp is great, the people are wonderful and the prices fantastic!
Our family has been enjoying BSC as our favorite annual vacation place for 23 years! When other families say they can’t get their teenagers on vacation with them, how do we do it? We admit it’s probably not the time with their parents, it’s BSC and the other BSC guests who have become family over the years that keep them coming back. We have made lifelong friendships with our BSC family. BSC is Very relaxing! I hang the keys up when we arrive and don’t feel the need to go out in the car. Can’t do that the rest of the year. The pond is great for watching sunrises from the hammock on our porch my favorite, swimming, floating, kayaking, boating, fishing just pure enjoyment! We have our own personal space, but outside space to gather with other families as well. 2021 will be different, as we need to provide our own lunches, but it will work out. It’s a week without cooking or planning meals, a break for the whole family!
My family has been coming here in whole or part for over 30 years. I started coming here when I was ten and now I get to bring my kid. It's a friendly, relaxing and wholesome vacation spot. The food is delicious and the service is personable. This is a vacation spot to build family memories for generations.Rooms: 5/5
My wife and I have been going there in late summer for many decades. Perfect place to relax. Cabins on the Great Pond miles long, and a short walk up the hill for breakfast, farmers dinner at noon, and evening meal.
Well run, family friendly campground. Cabins are available late spring to early fall, dining hall serves three meals a day, ranging in quality from adequate to very good. Good price for the quality of services and accommodations. If you like an outdoors experience with most of the comforts of home, seriously consider Bear Spring Camps!
Been going to Bear Spring with friends and family for 20 years now. It has become our number one vacation destination. The staff, especially Peg and Jeff, the lovely cabins, the home cooked style meals, and just the feeling of "ahhhhh" the moment you get there are all wonderful. But, more so than anything, it's the lady that beckons your return. The lady, the lake, Great Pond. Memories of her sewn in my mind's fabric. The fish caught, the boating, the campfires by her side...........the way it's beauty stuns and soothes simultaneously from one's cabin porch. It grabs you, never to let go. See you this weekend, my lady! Ellis
Nice fishing, nice cabins, mediocre food. One bad experience; a chair on our deck broke and my fishing companion landed hard on the floor with puncture wounds to his back from the sharp plastic shards. Fortunately there was an EMT in the cabin next door. She patched him up and called the office to report the incident. Nobody came down to see if he was alright. We spoke to the owner the next morning, she said she didn't know about it. The next day she saw us and didn't even ask how he was doing. That is wrong, and left a bad feeling on our part. The welfare of your guests should be a primary concern. I looked at several of the chairs at our cabin and others, most showed either a crack or stress fracture where the seat meets the back. I would not recommend Bear Spring to any of my friends.
Been going to Bear Springs for over 20 years. Absolutely love it. Great place to make memories.
I have returned to Bear Spring Camps for many years. I joined my father in-laws' group Michael Gallacher. He has since passed on. Along with My father, Wilburt Allen, both great men. I continue to go with the same group, close friends, and family. Re-charging my battery every time. Great accommodations, fishing, service, and food. What's not to like....
