Baxter's Hollow

This is a private forest preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy, but open to the public. There is a 2.5 mile, moderately rugged, marked trail starting from an entrance on Stones Pocket Road and ending at Forest Drive. The round trip took us 2-1/2 hours. The trail crosses and runs along Otter Creek and its tributaries in several places. The shade of the woods kept us 15 degrees cooler than in the open on this 90 degree day. This place is a hidden gem.

This would be an interest place to explore if you're looking for certain things. I went on the one trail that I assume ends up taking you to the end of Forest Dr. It's the only trail I know that exists. The trail didn't circle around so I ended up turing around after around 45 minutes. 15 minutes in all the overgrowth ends and it gets muddy in some places. 20 mins in is the "Hollow" area. 30 mins in it didn't seem like there was much else to see. On Maps, Stones Pocket Rd isn't actually a road that far in. I'd go back, but it's not something I HAVE to keep going back for.

It used to be Klondike campground. A beautiful place to escape to..my first paying job was there..

Amazing public land! not much for trails but great terrain!

Snow shoed up Stones Pocket Road on a quiet Feb. morning after a fresh show fall. Magical. Came back a little later in Feb. and explored the lower section of otter creek with camera. Still finding spots I haven't seen before.
