About

Mother Church to Montreal's English speaking Catholics

Story

St. Patrick's Church was opened on March 17th, 1847 to serve the needs of the Irish immigrants who had come to Montreal in great numbers due to the famine and other troubles in Ireland. It was raised to the status of Minor Basilica by His Holiness, Pope John-Paul II in 1989 because of its historical importance as the mother church of the English-speaking Catholics of greater Montreal.

The Basilica has been designated an Historical Monument by the Government of Quebec and in 1996 Saint Patrick's was named a National Historic Site of Canada.

Absolutely stunning building. We visited on a weekday morning and there was not another soul to be seen. The acoustics were incredible; every step, every cough, every little sound was magnified five times over. A must see for anyone, regardless of belief system.
It was so beautiful. I love the wood work throughout the whole cathedral. The detail was exquisite. Definitely a must see when your in Montreal.
We were fortunate enough to catch the tail end of a service so had the opportunity to explore the church afterward. It is such a beautiful and serene place. Definitely a must see in Montreal.
Beautiful church if you like architecture. I took tons of pictures here. Just beautiful.
This church is beautiful. The service is in English and the priest is a great speaker. If you are visiting and want to see a nice service come visit. I Love how tall the church is and the green. The pictures are from Christmas Eve service but any time is a good time if it's open. It's one of the must visit churches in Montreal.
So beautiful. What a great historical church to visit and/or attend mass at. So much to see, a must if you visit Montreal. Lovely! We really enjoyed ourselves.
Beautiful, classic church. Glad I got a chance to visit. It's a peaceful place to pray, reflect or just enjoy some quiet time. It's also fun to talk around and enjoy the beauty. They definitely don't build churches like this anymore and that's a shame. I love churches that feel holy and special, and this one definitely does.
