Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre

About

Come study coastal and marine sciences and explore the breathtaking biodiversity of BC's wild west coast at the world-class Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre

Story

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre was established in 1972 by the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society (WCUMSS) in order to provide a permanent base for marine and coastal-oriented field operations on the west coast of Canada. The property consists of 75 hectares with approximately 3.0 kilometers of waterfront at the confluence of Grappler and Bamfield Inlets.

Situated within the traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation in Barkley Sound, and adjacent the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, BMSC offers unparalleled access to a wide array of environments—including unique coastal, marine and rainforest habitats and exceptional species diversity.

BMSC is owned and operated by the non-profit Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society (WCUMSS) whose members are Simon Fraser University, the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, and the University of Victoria. The Society has a mandate to:

- Provide world-class research infrastructure for marine and coastal scientists from the member universities and from other Canadian and International institutes;
- Offer senior undergraduate and graduate courses and programs in marine and coastal sciences;
- Provide training for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and technicians in practical aspects of marine and coastal research;
- Offer in-residence programs in marine biology and general science to schools, colleges, First Nations and other public groups.

Mission

We deliver world-class coastal sciences research and educational opportunities.

Got to meet the Chief, Mayor and government officials! Wow! UVIC, U of Alberta, UBC, SFU, U of Calgary represented! Beautiful facility! As a mother of teenage daughters who want to be doctors, this makes me happy!
A wonderful educational experience! Great lab facilities. Cool live specimens. Access to WiFi. Clean accommodations!
Most amazing experience ever happened in this facility at Bamfield. It was a one and half month long marine course from University of Alberta. Sticked with only 4 other students and 2 professors for the entire course and learned the most amazing marine lives around the area. Fabulous experience and intensive studies. The cafeteria had some decent chef and cooks to prepare meals for all students. The lecture theatre was also well equiped for anything professional lessons. The dorm was decent size and clean as well. Definitely recommend the fellow students to take courses here at this place. You will never regret.
The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre is an educational centre and a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to education and research. It is affiliated to some of the prominent universities of Canada. It promotes research in marine life and has a large laboratory. The residential campus can accommodate a large number of students and there is an excellent cafeteria as well. During our short visit to Bamfield in August 2019, we did not have the time to visit the campus but viewed it from the Bamfield Inlet on the eastern side.
Loved shooting a wedding here! The Rix centre is a beautiful space with tons of light and the views from here for sunset are magical.
