Mission

We strive to provide a safe, clean and fun environment for your dog.
The owners and staff at Bark Avenue are all pet owners and are active with animal rescue organizations in the Montreal area. Bark Avenue acts as a foster home for the Montreal SPCA, Gerdy's Rescue and others, and provides obedience training and consultation for foster and shelter dogs in need. We are very pleased to offer discounts for our clients whose dogs were adopted from a shelter, pound, or animal rescue organization.

CLASSES:

BASIC OBEDIENCE
Puppy Classes for puppies up to 12 months old
All classes will take place in a group environment with a maximum of 6 dogs per class

Puppy Level I: For puppies up to 5 months of age
Duration: 6 weekly classes of 1 hour each
The initial classes will be split into 2 equal parts. The first half of the class will be spent letting the puppies play and socialize which is critical at this age. We will be showing the owners what is appropriate play behavior and what is not. We will also be introducing an adult dog into the scenario who is very comfortable around young dogs so they get socialized with larger dogs as well.
The second half of each class will be teaching the puppy trust and respect. This includes learning commands such as sit, stay, down and come. We will also concentrate on name recognition and stopping unwanted behaviors such as jumping up and nipping. Participants should bring treats and their own kibble for their dog as well as one of his favorite toys which we will be using as a reward.
Cost: $200

Puppy Level II: For puppies from 5- 10 months of age
Duration: 6 weekly classes of 1 hour each
Puppies in this class must have completed Puppy Level I either at Bark Avenue or a similar course at another training center. Puppies should know basic commands such as sit, stay, down and come but are not expected to be completely proficient at them. We will be working on these commands during these training sessions while adding real life distractions. We will also be introducing the place command which is essential in teaching your puppy impulse control and the ability to calm himself down.

Cost: $200

Puppy Level III: For puppies from 8-12 months
Duration: 6 weekly classes of 1 hour each
This class is designed for puppies who have completed levels I and II or similar courses at another training center. We will be working at farther distances from the puppy using existing verbal commands learned in levels I and II and introducing hand signals. We do this to eventually work with him at a distance ultimately resulting in the ability to have the dog obey commands off leash. We will also concentrate on having the puppy able to heel off leash.

All throughout levels I, II and III we will be concentrating on teaching the puppies verbal commands but we will also be concentrating on the socialization aspect of their training. Level 1 will involve more time devoted specifically to this although proper dog to dog socialization is always a big part of any training class. We will be teaching owners the proper way to introduce 2 dogs and we will be practicing drills that allow the puppies to have close contact with other puppies while still remaining in control and doing so in a respectful manner.

One on One Socialization: Intro to Daycare

Price: $600

Most dogs want to be in a social environment and want to be around and interact with other dogs. Some however are too nervous or fearful and just don’t know how to go about it. This can often be seen as aggression to the untrained eye but is usually based in fear. This same fear based aggression can often be seen on leash when passing other dogs. At ALPHA Dog Training we have developed a desensitization program to allow your dog to be around other dogs with the final goal of having them introduced into a daycare scenario.

Step 1: Muzzle Conditioning (2-1 hour sessions)
This step takes place in several increments and involves daily reinforcing from the owner. We start with a 1 hour session at mealtime (morning or evening) as food is used as a reward. A few days later we do another session of 1 hour to complete the process. After these two sessions and daily reinforcement from the owner the dog should feel comfortable wearing the muzzle without trying to take it off.

Step 2: Street Walk (1 ½ hours)
We take the dog for a walk outside with many every day distractions and get him feeling comfortable walking in public with the muzzle
Step 3: On Leash Indoor Socialization With Muzzle (1 ½ hours)
We walk indoors with the dog with other dogs in the room. Starting with 1 dog and progressing until we have several dogs present this step takes place on leash. The final number of dogs in the room will be dependent on each individual case and the ability of your dog to handle the situation without too much stress.
Step 4: Off Leash Indoor Socialization With Muzzle (1 ½ hours)
Using the same concept as step 3 we quickly progress the dog from an on leash walk to off leash increasing the number of dogs in the room.

Step 5: Daycare
Once the dog is comfortable being in an off leash environment and muzzled we introduce them to our daycare. Included with this training is 3 days of daycare. Additional day care packages can be purchased at this point. Because every dog is different there are no guarantees that after this socialization process the muzzle will be coming off the dog. Some will take longer and some will progress quickly with the emphasis always being on safety. The final decision as to when the muzzle is removed will always be at the discretion of the trainer.

Happy tales at Bark Avenue!! My boy has been going to daycare for a few weeks now and loves his time there. He comes home happy and tired from a great day of play. Dogs are treated warmly and lovingly. They really enjoy going and come home pooped.
Trustworthy boarding for my anxious dog!
Amazing place all around. Professional trainers and warm staff. Our pup especially likes their dog day care.
The most caring, dog loving people we have ever met. Deb and John are amazing as are the whole staff. Our dog doesn't even look back when we leave him. We just mention that he is going to Bark to see Deb and he waits at the door.
Please be aware that the owner is abusive.
