When you name your restaurant Aburi King, you kind of set high expectations for aburi sushi. Located next to Penang Delight Cafe, Aburi King recently opened in January – taking over the location from Maruyama. Never missing a chance to try a new aburi sushi restaurant, I arrived for an early dinner and was surprised at how busy it was at 5pm. They brought out a complimentary Fish & Chips Cone normally $1.50 made with sole fish tempura, avocado, cucumber, masago, and topped with crunchy potato flakes. It was an interesting roll with my initial bites comprised mainly of the small, crispy potato flakes which I suppose was representing the “chips” part of the roll. I think it could have been better if the crispy bits were spread out throughout the roll however. I wound up ordering the Bluefin Tuna Aburi Oshi Sushi $10 and a selection of their Aburi Nigiri Sushi you pay an extra $0.50 to turn their regular nigiri into aburi nigiri. From left to right: Toro $3 + $0.50, Tuna $2 + $0.50, Salmon $2 + $0.50, Hamachi $3 + $0.50, and Ebi $2 + $0.50. The toro was the best of the bunch followed by the salmon. It very much reminded me of the aburi nigiri that I had at Ikoi in New West. I preferred the aburi oshi sushi as it had a nice mix of crispy and creamy textures. The bluefin tuna was a good option and was buttery soft but I wish that the creamy avocado in the centre carried all the way through to the end pieces. The interior of this restaurant is a bit dark in the back of the restaurant there’s better natural lighting in the front from the large window and the black painted cinder block walls adds a bit to the coziness. The menu’s a bit limited but I’d be interested to try out some of their non-aburi items to see how they fare.
I have visited this place for 3 times. Visited the first time when they just open, it was amazing, their sushi and tempura udon are decent and fresh. I gave them 5 stars. Second time after couple of months, they changed their menu, price went up but the food were still tasty. The last time is today. I’m not sure if I want to go back again or not. Tempura is half cold and not even crispy! How can you made a deep fried food cold? And service is not as good as before. Very sad to see such a good restaurant become like this. Very sad.
Came in for dinner on a weekend. The restaurant was quite busy so reservations are recommended. The servers were very friendly and attentive. The fish n chip cone tasted crispy. Chicken katsu was juicy and good portion size. Tempura was overdone. Aburi nigiri was not as seared as much as I would like so the fish tastes warm and fishy. Ramen was good in portion size but the broth was lacking in flavor. Sashimi slices were very thin
This tiny place is actually a hidden gem where you can find the best aburi sushi and have the best service ever! This place is very easy to find since the title is very obvious. As shown in the photos, the place can be seen right across the street since the huge black text “Aburi King’ is significant on the white background. The restaurant is very well decorated with romantic dim lights and the small, lovely fountain near the entrance. It’s overall a small area, yet very cozy and quiet which I really like. Right when we sat down, the server came over with a bright smile on her face and two menus in her hand, ready to hand them over to us. She was very patient, friendly and welcoming. She happily explained to us the ingredients in the dishes and advised us which one to get. While waiting for the food, the server brought one dish that we didn’t order. She said that it was a gift from the restaurant since this place was just opened in January! Isn’t it cute of them to offer everyone that? I don’t remember exactly the name of the dishes that we ordered, but it was four of the five aburi sushi in the menu. I don’t really like the scallops, but the others all taste amazing! The scallops didn’t taste that good, but it doesn’t mean that it was horrible. It was just not as good as others! That’s why this place still deserves a five star, which I hope to give an extra star if possible!
Excellent & polite service, food came out quickly, we didn’t have to wait long. The food was very flavourful especially the volcano scallop, the ramen was alright and the spicy salmon was small in portion and the sauce was too runny. But other than that the Aburi was delicious and would come back again.
May 1, 6 pm High-end ambience restaurant with a decent Japanese cuisine for a reasonable price. Staff is courteous and thoughtful. Shoya Ramen - 3/5 great presentation, good portion, but not much flavor, noodles were too thick for me Aburi Roll - 4/5 amazing roll set, delicious combination, just 2 pieces of roll were too spicy for my friend
The sushi is out of this world!! Alot of the fish is flown in from Japan daily. You gotta try one of the tasting menus! Fish selection changes daily. Cool restaurant in a residential neighborhood run by the owner who used to be the executive s chef from the Blue Water Cafe and his wife.
Excellent service. Was given a fish & chips cone free of charge both times. Not big portions considering the price, but nicely presented. Tempura was outstanding. The perfect amount of crispiness on the outside and hot and gentle in the middle, with the coating and the content well attached. Haven't tried their ramen yet but the kitsune udon was decent. Not too salty nor soggy.
Amazing service! Super sweet people and high-quality sushi without the high quality price. They even gave us fish and chip cones as a sample! So yummy... I'm not even a fan of sushi cones.. until now
I am so please with my experience today! I came here with my gf as she's never tried before and also its only my second time visiting but it seems like the service is always good. Servers are nice and friendly, chefs are welcoming on arrival and departure. I actually tried the aburi oshi and love it! If i had to compare it to other oshi i would say this is a 'healthier' version. The ones I usually love are the very oily ones. This one isnt oily but you can taste the torched fish. There is no layer of mayo/fat on top of the fish. We each ordered the salmon oshi and it did not disappoint. At 10$ a pop it was well worth it. I love how they have avocado in the centre! What a treat! I personally am not a fan of salmon but was surprised by the texture and freshness of the spicy salmon sashimi! Finally i was able to taste the fish and chip cone free as this time it was complete. It was delicious! And even tho my arteries are probably clogged even more today i still want more! Although there is no salad on the menu, they were able to whip up a side salad for me for 3.50$. It was delicious because i really love greens! I hope they revamp the menu and add it on because I'm sure people will order it. My brother recently introduced me to this place and i am still on the fence having only been here once. They are currently offering a free cone if you visit. The aburi roll was ok, but with a name like aburi KING the food should reflect this. So far the best aburi/oshi style food ive had is still at sushi victoria. I will come back again because my brother loves it here. But hopefully the quality is better next time. I am excited to try the oshi and maybe i can update my review. I hope it can reflect the 5's that others have experienced!
