Very cool cafe with a great concept that features micro-roasters and a re-cup program that allows you to borrow and return cups instead of having single use cups. The guys there at least the ones I chatted with really know their coffee and are also really personable! I’ll be sure to return the next time I visit Ottawa!
Nice vibe that sparks creative and innovative thinkings. Cozy space to spend a weekend afternoon doing anything you want or just say dreaming. The barista has an interesting strategy of sourcing the beans. Always can have something to express for. Hope the pastries can be freshly baked in house. But given its quality of coffee, food is not a big deal.
528 Coffee is an inspiring business with delicious coffee and a welcoming, warm, and positive atmosphere. A new, instant Ottawa classic! Serving not only coffee, but also other fun initiatives and pop-ups, with an emphasis on supporting local. I'm looking forward to seeing all the neat projects 528 Coffee will get up to as they continue to grow and establish themselves on Somerset Street. Well worth checking out!
A quaint and friendly coffee shop. The coffee was excellent, smooth and bold! By far some of the best coffee in Ottawa.
I really wanted to like this little coffee shop. Went out of our way to visit it as I saw online that they’re about featuring rotating micro roasters and emphasizing the coffee itself, and that they encourage minimizing waste through reusable cups. The space itself is cool too, nice vibe and good music though very dead on a weekend afternoon. Unfortunately, our experience was a bit disappointing. It was so dead, one of the guys in the back working @ Torta Boyz ? had to nudge the barista to get her to see we were in and needed to be served. While we were ordering, I asked which coffee was featured as the espresso and the barista had no idea which seemed strange for a place that is supposed to be focused on the coffee. We ordered oatmeal cinnamon cookies and cortados. The cookies were fine but I’ve had far better cookies at nearly every other coffee shop nearby. For the cortados, we were expecting small cups with 1:1 espresso to milk. Instead, the coffee came in large mugs 16 oz maybe? filled to the brim. I know there are variations on the cortado but general consensus is usually 1:1 espresso to milk and no variation I've ever heard of comes this diluted/massive. I’m okay with dark roasts but the drink somehow tasted watery as well as over extracted and bitter. It’s the first time I think I’ve ever left an independent coffee shop without drinking all of my coffee my partner also didn’t finish his. Suffice to say, this was a huge letdown. Places in Ottawa like Arlington Five, Drip House, Art House Café, Red Door Provisions, Ministry of Coffee, Little Victories and Equator all are worth more of your time. I’m disappointed because I think the idea of the place is sound, the concept of rotating micro roasters is unique for Ottawa kind of like a coffee version of Bar Lupulus but, especially for a place that I thought was going to be really elevated and on point about their coffee, this just didn’t hit the marks when we visited. I may try again one more time in the next few months and revise my review if I have a better second experience.
This spot is the best of everything. You can feel the creativity. It’s owned and run by architects, so the space/vibe is perfect. I love their dedication to discovering new Canadian roasters. They’re ahead of the game on sustainability for real, not just for show. Highly recommend!
Great coffee and pastries! The venue is a welcoming, cozy, and comfortable little spot with very friendly service. Wide selection of roasts and pours for those looking to try them. They mentioned they were looking to have more community events art, music, etc planned going forwards. Definitely a new gem in Ottawa!
Lovely little place, eco conscious and stuff, Ben tolerated our excessive verbiage with no micro aggressions whatsoever, and our psychotic autistic soul feels heard and happy. So thank you Ben! </kreisys>
Fantastic coffee and people! The shop not only brings in amazing coffee from local and small unique roasters, but they're also working with other local shops to promote local businesses. This is a great location to find fantastic coffee, coffee products, and to learn about local businesses doing fantastic work. Recent examples of collabs: vegan burgers I'm not vegan, but you should try these!, used books, second hand vinyl and byo vinyl Saturdays!
I went to this café to study today, and for the most part, it was a lovely experience. The barista was super nice I believe he was the owner. I got a flat white and one of their coffee doughnuts. He served the coffee and pastry to my table, which was very kind of him, and I went up to pay right afterward. I continued to work there for about 3-4 hours. As I was heading out and returning my dishware, the barista asked me if I had paid for my items. Something about this really struck a nerve, as I had been in that café for multiple hours, and not once did he ask any other customer if they had paid. I understand that many people come in and out of the café, and it's hard to keep track; however, this comment came off as a bit of a microaggression to me. I am a woman of colour, so I don't know why I was asked this question when many people had also dined in for a few hours. Anyway, it just made me sad as your café is a lovely place. Moving forward, I think you should implement a system to ensure you keep track of who paid so none of your customers leave feeling singled out like I did.
