Located about 20min from Whitehorse. They have a bus you can pre arrange for groups. I chose to walk the 5km figure 8 route. I went in April. Weather was good and fresh. A bit of ice but still easy to find bare sections for the walk. I unfortunately didn’t have my Cannon camera with me so my photos are limited by the lens of my phone camera. Still, it was a beautiful day and I did spot most of the animals. I missed the lynx and red fox and moose but I managed to get shots of the rest. The walk was peaceful and the scenery is beautiful. They had a turnout of 400 for the Easter Egg hunt the weekend before. So they have special events and school tours as well. Staff was fantastic- personable and informative.
Very welcoming and informative staff. Sights were amazing and I got to see all of the animals. There is an option to walk the area ~5.5 km/3.4 miles or you can go on a bus and stop at the various habitats in the preserve. Would definitely recommend, great experience! Restrooms: There is 1 restroom at the start of the preserve by the check-in lodge and another roughly halfway through the preserve.
It's like an arctic rehab centre/zoo, there's probably about 20 species in spacious pens including cliff ranges for the mountain goats. It makes the animals hard to view sometimes but it's a natural and humane habitat. Most people seem to take driving tours where they get off on foot at designated viewing areas, but others also just bike or pull a sled the entire way around. It's very quiet and peaceful.
We arrived later than expected but we had a great time! Beautiful wildlife and scenery! We saw most of the animals except the Arctic fox; they said she was hiding. We got to see the red fox bathing in the sun. We were struggling to return to the office on time before closing. They were so nice, they sent the bus to get us so we got to learn more about the park and the animals. Cool place to visit! Allow extra time to watch the animals and take your time to walk the distance.....
We took a guided tour here in this reserve from Whitehorse. We saw several moose, bison, caribou, arctic fox, mountain goat , sheep , lynx here. The reserve is very beautiful in winter conditions. It is a great place for a 2/3 hour day trip and some great wildlife photography. I will recommend this place and will definitely visit in summer/ fall.
If you’re an animal lover you will love this place too. The staff and volunteers who give guided tours are so knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds are large, beautiful and the animals are clearly well cared for. They did a great job arranging habitats so animals can be as near or far from visitors as they wish it’s disappointing when animals we want to see are hiding but just like us humans sometimes animals want some privacy. I walked around the property which took 4 hours I like to take things in and take my time. I did run into a couple of bus tours and overhead the guides. They really know their stuff and they can spot the more camouflaged animals like the Lynx someone without a trained eye would miss. If I were to do it again I’d do the bus tour first and then go back to the animals I wanted to see more of. I appreciated the interesting selection of books at the gift shop and that the money goes to covering the costs of animal care at the preserve. I enjoyed myself and recommend for animal lovers visiting Whitehorse.
The walk/hike took us about 1.5-2h. It was nice but also partially boring. Still, there are some amazing animals that you get to see real close. Overall, a relaxing walk and not very crowded. Pit toilets and trash around the road.
I had a private guided tour of this Wildlife Preserve which is perfect during this raging Omicron strain. When I came here, the temperature was -39 degrees celsius so make sure if you do come here in winter, check the temperature carefully before coming. Fortunately for us, we were in our minivan so when we couldn't withstand the cold, we quickly ran back into the minivan to warm up and hide. We managed to catch a view of the bisons, moose, mountain goats, sheep, caribou, all the herbivores, but the carnivores were hiding from us and we did not manage to see the snow fox, nor the lynx. I guess with the moose so close, it was a great day. You can do your own walking tour but this place is huge so be prepared to spend at least half a day walking and be really prepared for the weather should it dip to really cold temperatures. We met a few hikers visitors and they got lost a little which is quite normal. Bring your phone and make sure it's fully charged and warm else the battery will freeze and stop working. All in all you can really have a great time here to see the animals and see how they adapt to the different seasons. This place also has a rehab facility so it's really doing a great job. A must to visit if you love wildlife and outdoors.
We took the bus tour which went slightly longer than advertised to ensure people could snap photos of the animals we saw up and about. Most of the species we saw were active, and the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable.
A neat Yukon experience! Five kilometres of walking by, watching, and learning about some iconic Yukon wildlife! From goats to sheep, elk to moose, caribou to deer, bison to muskox, fox, lynx, and squirrels! If you’re in the Whitehorse area, it definitely a place you should check out!
