Dr. Hughes and his team have always taken absolutely exceptional care of our dogs over the past decade. We've always felt comfortable bringing them to the clinic knowing they were in good hands.
Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic We had an incident where two dogs got into a brief altercation and the little one needed some immediate care. We called Dr Hughes Sunday night and he said he would be at his clinic in 15 minutes. Getting the dog inside, he gave her a good look over and explained everything thoroughly. The process involved a number of injections. One for relaxation, antibiotics and some local freezing. His first attempt was to try and correct the damage without having to use anesthesia. Unfortunately the little patient was not cooperating so the anesthesia was used. He told us to come back in an hour which we did. The issue was corrected and he gave us eye ointment and some pills to fight off any possibility infection. A follow up appointment was made to check the eye in a few days. During the entire process, Dr Hughes showed compassion and care for our pet. He engaged in some casual and related conversation to ease our anxiety. Thank you Dr. Hughes.
Above and beyond in every way you can imagine it. Extremely impressed. We are brand new to Yellowknife. Not only did staff squeeze my dog in for a visit on Thursday night before an extra long weekend, but they stayed regularly in touch with me during the day to make sure I knew we weren't forgotten. We got there at 6:30 pm and didn't leave until after 9:30 pm, well after closing time. Dr. Hughes explained everything to us every step of the way, including details of the surgery that would be needed. He was absolutely beyond words excellent with our dog and brought a humanity to service I think is unusual to experience nowadays. Then, to our amazement, he offered to follow us home and help/show us how to carry our dog up the massive flight of stairs to our place our dog is 45 kg. Yep, definitely above and beyond. We'll be singing his kudos for quite some time to come, and he's guaranteed himself a brand new client.
Amazing Drs & staff that treat with both medicine & love. Saved our cat's life and takes amazing care of our other pets too. Very informative visits and Dr Hughes tells it as it is.
I find that Dr Hughes is very kind and gentle with all the animals he treats. He explains what is going on with your pet and what the treatment is and why. My little dog loves him and let's him do whatever he needs to without flinching or crying. She gets very excited when I take her there. Dr. Hughes is her best friend. My cat who doesn't let anyone hardly even pet him let's Dr. Hughes examine him and give him his vaccines.
My dog was sick puking and having bloody stools all night. After going to the other animal hospital thinking they would take us right away, they told us we can only be seen in the afternoon. I called Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic and after telling them our ordeal, they took us in right away. The receptionist Kristy was lovely and supportive. When I arrived, I was impressed to know that they have a separate entrance to their examination room, in case your pet might be contagious. Being a nurse, I really appreciate this detail to infection control which I have not seen in any vet clinic EVER! Dr.Hughes was lovely, very thorough, vet competent. He explained what my dog might be going through. Explained every treatment we had to take. I left thinking my dog is getting the right treatment. Thank you so much! Definitely recommend!!
Treatment was refused for my dog who was choking on a foxtail. Staff insisted it was kennel cough and asked us to leave. Very unprofessional. Disappointed by their lack of listening to me as the dog owner and a potential paying client. My animals will not be brought back for vet services.
Rude, condescending and ignorant "boutique" "desk clerks". Terrible communication skills and handling of triage. Refused to allow my gaging, coughing fully vaccinated dog seen by the vet. Also, a suspected eye cornea ulcer, which is visible and worries me tremendously. My suspicion is that they refused my dog based on appearance, as my sweet girl is an AmStaff. I must now drive seven hours to Alberta for the next closest vet where she can hopefully get in for a nose/throat scope, and proper eye drop medication. The Alberta vet tech, even just over the phone, agrees kennel cough is not what would be causing her symptoms. What a monopoly. I hope that for new residents of Yellowknife, more vet clinics will be open or at least more Vets come to provide much needed services for the area as almost every person seems to have a dogs . If I could give negative stars.....
It's all about the money. On july 4th 2022, I brought in a urine sample from my dog that had major peeing problems, there was traces of blood in his pee. It cost 72$ for the exam and I also brought my own container. I had to call them back on July 27, 23 days after dropping the pee container. The lady at the phone took my information down, again, and said the vetinarian will call me ASAP. 9 days later and here we are, I still have no calls. Good thing my pet recovered with rest, activity and lots of water. I was warned that the owner was only interested in money and did not care about the pet or the client. Saddly, I had to experience it myself. I was scammed 72$ and a perfectly good container, don't make the same mistake I did. August 6 2022 I received a call from the veterinarian, he called and mentioned the review. I found that detail rather funny and hypocritical. He proceeded to give an explanation that I did not listen to. After having over 25 days to make a phone call, I doubt they were that busy they couldn't give me a 5 minute call letting me know the test results are in. So the call continues, and he tells me my dog has crystals in his urine and he's going to get more sick. I would of been worried weeks ago but these are results for a urine sample done last month. It doesn't hold any real relevance now. Although he was right, after dropping off the urine sample in July, two or three days later my dog had massive diarrhea and he had difficulties holding it in. It was a mess every morning and when I had to pick up his poo with a little bag, I needed multiple bags. We argued politely to end with the call, my dogs test results "should" be printed at the front desk. I might not have been scammed after all. Tuesday August 9 I went down to the vet's location and received the test results FINALLY, so I did not get scammed but they are slow, takes 1 month for test results. It's safe to say I won't be going there again!
