Woodmere Cemetery

Story

Woodmere Cemetery is at West Fort Street and Woodmere Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, in the neighborhood of Springwells Village in what was originally the township of Springwells. Woodmere Cemetery is operated by the Midwest Memorial Group.HistoryThe Woodmere Cemetery Association was organized on July 8, 1867 by a group of prominent Detroit businessmen who purchased approximately 250 acres to establish a rural cemetery for the city of Detroit. Woodmere's layout was designed by Adolph Strauch, who also designed Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Construction began in 1868 and the cemetery was dedicated on July 14, 1869.The first burials occurred prior to the cemetery's official opening. The first burial was for Anna Maria Schwartz, who was buried in Section C in November 1868. She was soon joined by approximately 2,000 removals from Detroit's City Cemetery that were reburied at Woodmere. In addition to these burials, the city of Detroit also contracted for approximately five acres for the burial of the city's poor. Section C is the cemetery's oldest section and where the large Elks' Rest monument can be found. Once Section C was filled, Woodmere ended its contract with the city to bury the city's poor.Notable SectionsThe U.S. Army section is at the cemetery's southern end, next to Dearborn Avenue. This section was purchased by the U.S. Army and contains veterans from the Civil War as well as World War II. In 1896 the Civil War soldiers buried at Fort Wayne were moved to Woodmere as the cemetery there had fallen to decay and the records were in shambles. The flagpole in this section divides the Grand Army of the Republic section on the left from the U.S. Army section on the right.

They take time in placing headstone. Not just within days but months or years. They are quick to ask for their money so that should tell you where there customer skills are at. Place isn’t maintained well and trust me they have the funds to keep this place in shape. They don’t care to do it that’s why you’ll see trash/grass overgrown covering loved ones headstones. Hours are not feasible for loved families to visit. I believe in karma so no need to complain to managers. This place owners will get what they deserve. Mark my words.
I recently visited my grandmothers grave, it had been 50 years since anyone had been there and it was difficult to find. Tracy Campbell was profession and extremely helpful as were the rest of the staff I interacted with. Thank You
They became family. They care about you and your loved ones. Jason and the rest of the groundsmen keep. The yards beautiful. My sweet boy is in here.
Unless you enjoy your loved ones grave constantly being destroyed by the crack head junkies they employ, you should find another cemetery. This is at least the 20th incident in the last 5.5 years. Try hiring some decent people because this is getting old. Not to mention all the money this joke of a place brings in they can’t even fix the roads.
Having a very poor experience with Tracy Campbell in regards to getting my mothers urn buried in her fathers plot since he was buried elsewhere. The plot was already paid for as well as burial expenses at the time. After exchanging over 28 emails she is giving me a hard time over pricing. I was told the 2nd interment rights would be removed which they were sort of but half the cost of the 2nd internment fee was added to the internment fee. I was told this is to cover opening, closing, and admin fees. However, the internment fee of $1195 is the fee for opening and closing and there is already a separate $175 admin fee. Not sure why only half the 2nd internment rights fee was removed and the other half added to the internment fee. Then the document they sent to sign didn’t even have the 2nd internment rights removed nor the prices updated! Very poor experience very disappointing was once a beautiful cemetery. Update: Worked with Mrs/Ms Sommer from Woodmere cemetery who was able to resolve all the issues I had quickly and get everything scheduled for me. Increasing to 3 stars because the initial help Tracy was so awful and took so long for no reason. Thank you!
Couldn’t find my friend gravesite. I asked for help & all they gave me was a piece of paper and circled a large area of gravesites. When I went to go look, I ran into someone else who was looking for her father and she said she’s been coming to the cemetery for years searching for him and still haven’t found him !!! That’s sad !
This place does not even deserve a one star review. It’s been two years and they still have not put the headstone on. They continue giving the run around and are not professional. Please look elsewhere for your loved ones because this place will not respect them or you.
Beautiful cemetery full of history. Unique grave markers, statues and monuments.
The Woodmere counselor told me that the headstone will take 3-6 months. It’s been 10 months already. All what they care about is money, they made the loss of my 10 year old son even harder. The cemetery roads are terrible and the pond is always dirty. This place needs someone who can run it probably, for god’s sake you’re dealing with grieving families.
If there were zero star option that would be it. What has happened to this beautiful, historical, perpetual care cemetery? Mr. Mathis the old Superintendent must be looking down and crying. I am saddened my family as well as so many friends are here. This was a crown jewel of the city of Detroit and surrounding areas and the place for everyone to want to lay their loved ones to rest. I think everyone going through there would at least drive by the pond if not stop to see the ducks. We would even picnic there after visiting loved ones. The place is a disgrace and feels so open to crime it is sad. Who is running this place as it is terrible and media should be made aware. Heartbroken I even have loved ones there
