At this time, I would not recommend Wilbert Square Event Center. They certainly have potential to be a nice venue, but I would avoid at all costs until some changes have been implemented. What you can expect if your experience is anything like ours, or many of the previous reviewers: The event coordinator will not attend your event so you are on your own if you need anything the day of the event. The venue floor was filthy dirty with food from a previous event, but they asked us to decorate over it and they would clean later. They didn't, so our wedding guests helped my ex husband clean the venue the day of the wedding. The food was as cold as it would have been taking it straight out of the refrigerator and the pasta was not cooked well hard and sticky. At least 75% of our guests were served cold food. We were overcharged multiple thousands of dollars, then told that the corrected invoice after requesting the invoice three times over 10 days and not receiving it was offering us a "steep discount" despite our contract showing otherwise. The door frame fell off the wall part-way through the event and landed on a small child. It had been glued onto the wall with caulk. The venue was extremely hot during our reception, and no one was around to help us regulate the temperature. The tables still contained dirty plates of food, beer bottles, glasses and dirty linens the following day some was bussed the night of, but much of it was left and even though we have photographs to corroborate, they didn't believe us. When we brought all of these issues forward after the event, we were given every excuse under the sun, the event coordinator told us her staff was using us to "sabotage her" and the owners didn't believe any of our legitimate concerns again, as noted, the event coordinator was not on site for any of the event to dispute or corroborate our concerns. We asked for a discount for the extremely poor service and terrible food quality as their end of the contract was to provide a comfortable clean venue and hot food. They refused to refund any of our money claiming they already gave us a "steep discount" a corrected invoice from the overcharge and they did not make us pay a gratuity. You can DEFINITELY find a better venue.
Service is slow. Plan for an extra 30-40mins for an average meal. Not due to lack of employees like the conveniently placed plaques that plaster the confusing decor but due to what seems like a lack of training. The bartender is careless in his attempt to get drinks out. There's no drink menus at the tables and staff is unsure what they sell. There's other support staff clearly in the restaurant but they are not delivering orders, bussing tables, or delivering food regularly. It's almost as if no one really has any idea what they are doing. Management/ Ownership is lacking in attention to the issue if their idea is to inform guests to deal with slow service. The staff was nice and our waitress was trying really hard but clearly has no support. Food presentation was very nice and the quality of the food was pretty high which reflects the 3 Star. This place has potential especially with the hotel being attached but they really need to step it up for the price point of this restaurant.
Let’s just start with I am not the type of person to write a bad review BUT… I would 100% not recommend working with the folks who run this event center. The center itself has great potential in the beautiful town of Brookings. Unfortunately, my sisters wedding had many many issues that are still trying to be resolved. Her wedding was June 11…. First of all, the event center was dirty when we got there to set up on Friday. We were told to decorate around it and it was get vacuumed that evening spoiler alert: it did not… My dad, stepdad, and several of my sisters GUESTS had to come into the dirty event center to clean the morning of the wedding and move tables and chairs that the staff said would get moved. The food we had was refrigerator cold… the whole head table ate cold pasta. We heard from several other guests that the food was cold or lukewarm at best. None of the tables were bussed/cleaned. The head table still had our dirty plates, cups, and FOOD on the table the next morning… then when my sister brought up this issue the owners insinuated that the tables were “mostly cleaned” and she was making stuff up she has photos. A piece of wood trim fell off of the wall and hit a CHILD. My sister and her husband were basically called liars for bringing up the several issues they endured on the night of their wedding. They had an absolutely beautiful day in Brookings and they wouldn’t change it for the world, but at this time I would suggest finding a more customer service friendly location to host your wedding!
What a wonderful venue to have a wedding reception at. Amy, Andrea, Eric and the rest of their team were absolutely wonderful to work with. We had our rehearsal supper, wedding reception and gift opening all at the Wilbert Square Event Center and it was wonderful! Our guest raved about the meals and we loved how our rooms were set up for each event.
My son had reception/dance here. Food was delicious steak and walleye and staff did great job. Large banquet hall. Clean.
A bit pricey but well worth the money. The food was superb and the wait staff attentive.
Overall fun experience with a great atmosphere, kind of a hidden gem that's not know. Overall food was solid, just went in for some wine and appetizers to give the place a try. Steak tips very tender and cooked well needed a touch more salt and pepper, garlic and herb scallops needed more garlic and less herbs but where tender and prepared well, lobster bisque was spot on, light and creamy. Lime and raspberry cheesecake was light and well balanced.
Food was amazing, portions more than generous, great atmosphere. It was our 1st experience, definitely have a new place in Brookings.... it was so good, very personable waiter. 5 stars.
This terrific event center in Brookings, SD Is perfect for public and private events like weddings, conventions, trade shows. The It is connected to a comfort suites so your guests can stay right there. There is a pub and restaurant and also a large ballroom which is beautifully decorated with sculptured carpeting and a digitally controlled lighting system so you can create any effect you want for your event. Easy load in and load out for entertainers and other vendors. The owner is a sweetheart to work with. This is a total home run if you're planning an event. Ask for Susanne If you are looking for pricing and availability. Highly recommend!
We ordered so much food. The tomahawk steak was perfect as well as the crab cakes. We will be coming back.
