Gorgeous View !!!! This is the best hike trail park I visited so far. Nature amazed me with so beautiful view, complete forest or in the woods feel. The mountains with beautiful creative shapes into amazing waterfalls. All green all side. We loved this place. NOTE - If you want to cover the complete trail with no or less crowd, try to hit the trail by 7-8AM morning. We also started our day at 7:30AM, there was no car parked at that time, we completed by 10-10:30, it was fully crowded by then.
Amazing Views and trails. The mountains with beautiful creative shapes into amazing waterfalls. We did park our car at the bottom and took shuttle all the way up, shuttle charges 6 dollar per person. We started Indian trail from top going down with lot of look outs with good views. We were 4 adults and 3 kids so with kids it's easy to take Indian trail. They also have gorge trail which has amazing view but lot if stairs but would be totally worth it. Definitely worth visiting
Absolutely beautiful state park! It's a fairly easy hike that takes you under a couple waterfalls. It gets wet and muddy in some spots so be sure to wear shoes/boots and clothing you don't mind getting a little wet or dirty. Be sure to stop at the information center, one of the bridges was closed during our visit and the people working there helped us out by giving us map and marking a modified route passed the renovations and a side path that quickly takes you from the end back to entrance.
Fantastic State Park, beautiful and very well maintained. There are A LOT of steps, so that is something to consider in advance, especially on hotter days or if you are going with people who may be less able to manage a steep incline. Its relatively shaded though, so even on hot days , you are rarely stuck in full sun for long. The steps are all looked after well, toilets were clean and there were a few lovely things in the gift shop, so would definitely recommend this if you are in the area. There are lots of restaurants and ice cream shops not too far from the park so we made a lovely day of it.
Beautiful waterfalls!!! Lost of stairs but it is soooo worth it! The power of nature is amazing! The whole Gorge trail is breathtaking from first step till last! *wear closed shoes that hold your feet well and are preferably water resistant. The ground is often wet, slippery, and uneven. However this it still an easy hike with breathtaking views that you do NOT want to miss!
Absolutely beautiful place. Not a hard hike. Can take about a half hour or more. Upper gorge rim trails to look down on gorge but the gorge trail is better. Many waterfalls 2 you can walk underbut Rainbow Bridge waterfall by far the best. Great for all ages
Watkins Glen State Park is probably one of the more memorable New York state parks in the Finger Lakes area. With 778 acres to explore, most visitors head to the Gorge Trail, which snakes along Glen Creek through a 400 ft deep canyon. Although Watkins Glen State Park was a hidden gem to us, this unique natural landmark is widely known in the Finger Lakes area. What started out as a privately owned grist mill, has become a popular state attraction. Although Watkins Glen State Park was a hidden gem to us, this unique natural landmark is widely known in the Finger Lakes area. What started out as a privately owned grist mill, has become a popular state attraction with over 1 million visitors annually. My husband described Watkins Glen State Park like “walking up the stairs of a high rise building with a waterfall on each floor.” Although there are 800+ steps along the almost 2-mile Gorge Trail, it ends up being a fairly easy hike due to the constant stopping to take in the 19 waterfalls along the way. The way the water has carved the canyon walls is absolutely incredible. The pictures don’t do it justice. During the tourist season, Watkins Glen State Park can become quite crowded. When we travel, we are big fans of hitting sites early in the morning. I can’t stress enough…to avoid the crowds…go early! We arrived at this park by 7:30am and spent about 3 hours taking in its beauty…crowd free. This would not have been the case had we arrived closer to lunchtime. As we were leaving the park, parking lots were now full and visitors were pouring in. It was quite the park! I highly recommend a visit if you happen to be in the area.
Wow. That's all I can say. Amazing views and such a great area for hiking and wineries. The Gorge Trail is incredible. It's moderate with quote some steps but it's worth the exhaustion. I came here with my service dog and the Rangers were super friendly. Sally at the front desk was incredibly helpful. I would definitely make another trip out here.
The gorge is amazing and, though I have some criticisms I will get to, I must give this park five stars. First some useful information... I camped in the Onondaga section and a very convenient trail leads to both the south rim and gorge trails from here. It leaves from the bathroom area. No need to travel to the bottom of the gorge. Also, when you reach the gorge trail from the campground, all the best scenery is to the right. I went down, and back, and up and back. If you have time, desire, and strength, do the whole trail, but don't feel like you are missing something if you don't hike upstream from the campground. And I went again after dinner for better photographic lighting and fewer crowds. Don't worry if you don't have time for the rim trails. From what I saw they are beautiful walks through the woods with few or no views to recommend them - but I didn't go far myself. Bring water and leave Fido behind. Dogs are not allowed on the gorge trail. You should be in reasonable shape to hike the gorge. What does this mean? That's hard. Can you hike 5 stories up an apartment building staircase? You are good to go I suspect. I did see park staff assisting ederly guests that underestimated the effort. That said, if you are on the edge, go, take it easy, bring water, bring snacks for a bit of energy, bring a companion, bring appropriate shoes waterproof can be helpful but not strictly necessary - good traction and toe protection are necessary, and go. It's amazing! Now my issue: we are campers with a truck camper, similar to a van. Many sites are far from level. Camping sites can be that way and many trailers can accommodate this. We find it difficult. The real problem is that NY State Parks require you to make reservations site-unseen. Most other states I am familiar with allow you to drive through and pick a site appropriate to your rig, You must preregister in the NY system and online descriptions are not reliable or helpful. This isn't a Watkins Glen SP issue but instead a NY State Park system issue - it's a problem everywhere we go in New York's State Park system.
I brought my daughter here for a day trip. Even though the Gorge Trail was busy, it was completely stress-free. We did not feel rushed at all and had the opportunity to take over 120 pictures on the walk. The Gorge Trail is amazing, as highlighted by the included photos. Be aware that the walkways can get quite wet with puddles and clay. Additionally, there are quite a few stairs to climb along the trail, indicated by the moderate skill level designation. If you have any interest or connection with nature, this is a must experience.
