Wall Drug Store

About

America's Favorite Roadside Attraction!

Story

1931, December. Ted and Dorothy Hustead had just bought the one and only drug store in a town called Wall. The settlers named it this because it is on the edge of the South Dakota Badlands. Needless to say, business was not booming at this point in time. The family decided to give the store five years to grow.

Summer 1936, the business still had not grown much. With two children to care for times were not easy. One sweltering night after being kept awake from passing cars on Route 16A Dorothy has a personal epiphany. Her thought was that driving across the hot prairie travelers get thirsty. They want water. Ice water!!

Therefore, with the Depression in full swing, they installed the billboards.

It worked! Travelers WERE parched and business had never been better.

The next summer the family hired eight girls to help with the busy summer crowds.

(Now the Drug store draws up to twenty thousand people on a good summer day with almost one hundred employees on a given day)

Free ice water brought the Hustead's a long way. This story also teaches an important lesson- there is absolutely no place on God's earth that is Godforsaken. No matter where you live, you can succeed, because wherever you are you can reach out to other people with something that they need!

With 650 miles of billboards, you can't not stop at Wall Drug if you're in the area. It is easily the mother of all tacky roadside gift shops. If you like roadside attractions and can accept it for what it is, Wall Drug is a lot of fun. If you come in with high expectations, prepare to be disappointed. I truly feel for the young foreign staff who must have been excited to work in and experience America until the moment they arrived in Wall, South Dakota. There's no way to beat the bush on this, but Wall seems like a really boring place to live.

So - we read the reviews and decided to give the place a try. We were pleasantly surprised! They have some great gifts and amazing books. We got several Christmas gifts and there were sales as well. A fun quick stop with delightful staff.

Always a stop for us to and from the Black Hills and it never gets old. There is always something cool to find and purchase. Food is really good and the Free Ice Water is always cold. EDIT 08OCT2017 - Stopped in for a slice of apple pie on our way to the hills and its still amazing.

It was so much fun to show my children Wall Drug. Yes, cheesy souvenirs, but great memories to store away so they can bring their children someday. Wish we would have eaten at the cafe, it smelled great! Thanks Wall Drug for being open all year!

It’s a town in and of itself. There are individual shops within Wall Drug, and it’s definitely something to see. They have clothes, a restaurant, toys, a drug store, a gemstone shop...and during warmer months, the “backyard” is open. If you can, make it during the warmer months to see more, but it’s worth the trip even during colder months, especially as a stop along the way to see the Badlands.
