The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the oldest continuously-operating public art museum in the United States, founded by Daniel Wadsworth in 1842.

Story

Located in the heart of downtown Hartford, CT, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the steward of nearly 50,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of artistic expression.

The museum's collections include Greek and Roman antiquities, European and American decorative arts, world-renowned Baroque and Surrealist paintings, an unparalleled collection of Hudson River School Landscapes, European and American Impressionist paintings, Modernist masterpieces, Contemporary art, and more.

Something has gone very wrong in one of America's great museums. To begin with, the parking garage is now closed on weekends. WHAT! If you are coming from New York you are at the mercy of limited street parking. The once fine restaurant had become little more than a mediocre sandwich shop. This is still one of the country's great art collections, and it should be a major tourist destination, but no one in charge seems to want to make it one.

The building that the museum is in is quite spectacular and inspiring by itself. The exhibits are also great, and numerous. You'll need a full day to visit everything, and a couple if you want to take your time with everything. The Cabinet of Curiosity is just bursting with intriguing artifacts, you could spend hours there alone! Another great exhibit is the massive hall filled with hundreds of paintings from top to bottom, wall to wall; it's awe inspiring!

It's a gem, it should be packed all the time. Truly a mesmerizing place. Lots of thoughts and efforts put on exhibits. On a minor note, I wish the "guns" and not-that-stimulating items from the Colt family were removed. Aren't there any cool stuff from Hartford that do not involve firearms (like bicycles for instance)?

What a great collection of contemporary and fine art. Really great to have right in Hartford- and I’ve had the great food from the museum Café - makes it so you don’t even have to leave.
