The Food and Book People

Story

The Traveler Restaurant has been in buisness since 1970, serving many commuters who pass by on I-84, and also the local residents of Union, which is the smallest town in Connecticut.

The previous owner who was an avid reader decided he had to thin out his collection of books, putting them on the shelves of the restaurant seemed a good way of getting rid of them. The idea caught on to say the least, we presently give away one or two thousand books a week - about 100,00 a year. A tradition, the Murdock Family is carrying on. Books come to us from many different sources. Libraries are one of the best, providing us with leftovers from sales and books weeded from their shelves. Other soucres are auctions, flea markets, book fairs, and private homes. Many of our books are acquired from our customers, with accumulations of their own. Our hope is that each and every one of guests find a book to their liking on our shelves, and we hope to promote reading.

Perhaps you have already heard or read about the Traveler Restaurant. We have appared in Time Magazine, The New-Yorker, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Yankee Magazine, Triple A Magazine, Connecticut Magazine and even newspapers in Africa and Canada. We have been featured on Charles Kuralt's Sunday Morning Show, ABC News with Peter Jenings, An American Moment with James Earl Jones, Boston's ABC News, Channel 3 of Hartford and several cable shows and radio shows all over the world. The Murdock family welcomes you, invites you to enjoy a delicious meal, a free book and an enjoyable visit. Our meals are prepared and cooked to order, pleases give our staff time to serve you.... And please help yourself to 3 free books....

First time visiting this restaurant. Got there a little late for breakfast, so gave lunch a try. Was pleasantly surprised. From outside the building looks unassuming, if not dated. Walking in, the first thing you notice is the books. As one reviewer mentioned, “kind of like eating at a library. For being an older building the cleanliness is exceptional. Enough with this stuff. A restaurant is about the food. We ordered two items. A clam roll and a fish sandwich. Each came with fries and a small portion of coleslaw. The clam strips were tasty and a decent portion for the price and came on a grilled roll. The fish sandwich was also on a grilled roll. It was a breaded piece of haddock. Fish was very fresh and tasty. The coleslaw was very good and actually leaving me wanting a little more. Staff was friendly. If there was anything that some may consider a negative was the food took a little longer to come out. By no means did this bother or upset us! Gave us a little time to browse the books and select 3 books for each meal we purchased! We will certainly be back to give breakfast a try!
Cozy little spot right off of 84 in Union, CT. I loved everything about this... the food was delicious without being over priced, enjoyed watching the birds at the feeder outside the window and most of all the books and puzzles! Your gifted 3 free books when you dine at this establishment... many books to choose from. There's even a Children's section. Free books are upstairs and there is an entire space downstairs dedicated to used books for sale. The staff is wonderful! I will definitely be returning in the future.
Really neat place with friendly staff. We had dinner here whilst in the area. Vegan options are available. Husband had the turkey dinner and I opted for the mystic river wrap minus the cheese and horseradish and we both really enjoyed them. Food was fresh and hot and our waitress was awesome. Books line all of the walls and each person gets to take three books home! Really awesome idea and nice to see something new. Restaurant was very clean and had some items T-shirt’s, mugs, cards to purchase at the front area. They also have books for sale downstairs if interested. Recommend if you are passing through or in the area. Great atmosphere, great food, great service.
Charming dog-friendly restaurant with shelves of books throughout. We brought our yellow Lab puppy and had breakfast blueberry pancakes & scrambled eggs and bacon. Both we’e delicious! After our meal, we were able to choose 3 books each to take home from their collection. Service was excellent! Staff was super-friendly and accommodated us as well as our dog! We’ll be back!
Food and books, who could ask for more! I hadn't eaten at The Traveler in years but decided to stop when I was on my way to Boston. I was greeted by a super nice hostess who showed me to a table, and the server took my order quickly. I got a great salad with fresh greens, lots of crumbled blue cheese, walnuts, and cranberries. It was perfect, just what I wanted. And the unsweetened ice tea was fresh brewed, really who could ask for more.
Great little gem right off 84. Friendly service and good home style cooking in a unique restaurant of books. Definitely would go back! Hubby and I both had open turkey which was very good, kids had pancakes delish! So good we all had desert blueberry pies
This place was like finding treasure! From the outside it doesn’t look like much but when you get inside it’s like WOW! Books are everywhere! They even had a basement full of used books to buy. The food was delicious! And service was great. It was a nice oasis after dealing with NY traffic.
The meals were delicious. Our waitress was super kind and the milkshakes are dangerously good. Everything was clean and while it’s a bit dated it felt more cozy that way. We loved our free books and can’t wait for our path to cross back this way to come again.Recommended dishesBook Lovers
Unique dining and reading experience. Incredible maple bacon chicken sandwich and the best Reuben I've had in a long time! They even made my fries well done! Love the ambiance, food, books and prices!
It's still here, been visiting here over the last 40 years. This is one of the most unique and underrated destinations in New England. The staff is always friendly. The food is amazing, good quality, cooked to order. And you get free books! Plan some time to visit the book store downstairs too!Food: 5/5
