Mission

The Toronto Star publisher, Joseph E. Atkinson, believed that his newspaper had a social responsibility to its readers and the people of Toronto. Having experienced childhood poverty, Atkinson created a charity that helped needy youngsters during the summer months.

The Fresh Air Fund was established to help children escape the sweltering city during a heat wave in 1901. The tradition continues today to assist children in need. Thousands of children each summer have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of summer camp. For more information, go to http://www.thestar.com/freshairfund.

A few years later, Atkinson realized that there was a need to help less-privileged children at Christmas. During an economic recession in 1906, the Santa Claus Fund was created to provide gifts to less privileged children who otherwise would not have any gifts to open Christmas morning.
