The Wall

York has retained so much of its medieval structure that walking into its centre or around its 3 mile long 4.8 km Ancient city walls is like entering a living museum. Amazing experience! Be aware of no security fences in place in some parts along the pathway. The wall's gates close at dusk. Must be seen. Such a free of charge wonder!

An incredible walking view surrounding this great city. A must for visitors. There are several entry and exit points at various stages of the walls so you do not need an exact start and finish point. Also be aware that some lengths of the walk there are no barriers but it is not that big of a deal as it is not that high up, although ensure if you have children you keep them close! Some parts of the walk there is no walk and so need to walk on the roadside - just follow the maps and signs. Great views of the city and the Minster too.

Not every city has ancient walls you can walk around!! Great scenery away from the bustling crowds. Be a little mindful though, some places have a drop at the side without any fencing so keep an eye on any children you have with you. A great way to get into the city centre, easy enough to do a full lap as well, some steep stairs along the way.

I love York, I am lucky to live within an hours drive, it's such an amazing place, packed full of history & wonderful old buildings, so much to see & do. Really enjoyed being able to see and walk around the old city walls. Not something you’re still able to do in most towns/cities these days. Throughly pleasant for a stroll and gives some nice view points too.

Our hotel thankfully collected our bags for us upon arrival so we entered the wall straight from the rail station and followed it to the other side of town. It was a pleasant walk, some parts fairly narrow, especially if there was a passing by group or family. Most dangerous parts did have a railing for safety. You do need to climb some steep stairs in some parts, particularly near the gates. I'd recommend a dry day over a wet one for this activity. Definitely do include at least some part of the wall on your visit to York

A Great way to see this beautiful city. It is open to the public and it is free. With several entries along the way. I did an early morning walk so I had a chance to see the wall with a beautiful sunrise.

Well worth doing the walk on the city walls around York. Although missing in places finding the next section to carry on the full lap is easy enough. Just make sure you have Google maps or similar. Lovely views of the city from many parts of the wall and the gate houses are spectacular. For a small charge you can go into one of the gate houses and look around, has information boards and film playing.

Loved walking round the city walls, there are gaps between the walls but it's really well marked with maps and place markers so you won't get lost. Amazing views of the city.
