I had painted in oil on my own for years, learning by trial and error, but when I decided to try my hand at watercolour, I felt some direction would be beneficial and I signed up for my first class at the Visual Art Centre. Was I pleased with my decision? So much so that I ended up taking additional classes for a half dozen years and was never disappointed. Not only were my teachers talented artists themselves, they also had the ability of transferring their knowledge and techniques to their students. A wonderful atmosphere to develop creatively with other talented peers while having fun. Highly recommended.
Attended the "Ring in a Day" workshop given by Cynthia Hawkes and it was amazing! Cynthia and her assistant were very attentive and patient teachers. I went in without any knowledge about jewellery design and came out with two silver rings that look like they were made by a pro! The Visual Arts Centre has also put in place many COVID safety procedures such as plexi glass between stations, PPE and cleaning. I felt very safe during my time in the studio. Will be back for more courses very soon.
An enchanting gallery space. The current exhibit titled "with the seasons" captivating!
I have been taking pottery classes at the art center for about a year now. Very good experience. The open studio is a very good thing, I wish that hours were a bit more extended. Staff is friendly and helpful. This is a great place if you want to meet people, exchange and learn pottery as a hobby. Only downer is that the pottery studio is in the basement, It would be nice if it would be in one of the upper studios, especially since it is so popular and gets pretty crowded some times.
I've been attending the Montreal Visual Arts Center for the past 4 years and without prior artistic training have learned a great deal about drawing , color and the use of the various media. The instruction has been top notch and those attending the classes were very collegial and helpful to the overall efforts. Instruction is given in both languages and the 3-hour sessions go by seamlessly. I heartily recommend this institution for any amateur interested in furthering their visual art expertise.
Taking courses at the VAC gave me the confidence to move on to the Studio Arts Program at Concordia to receive my BFA. The teachers and staff are always helpful and supportive and the exhibitions and artist talks at the McClure Gallery are an added bonus to an already exceptional community art school. I volunteer as a board member at the VAC because it is a jewel of an art school!
Am new to the city, and signed up for a pottery course after many years away from turning. Great class, professional teaching, and very friendly. The extra drop in times are a great added feature to the course, and it makes it certainly worth the money. I highly recommend taking courses here.
Very Negative Experience! AVOID The Visual Arts Centre! They provide confusing information about Courses/Summer Camp/Youth Summer Workshops/Youth Courses/Weekly Sessions. There are ambiguous different rules/cancellation policies for each of these. So just register, and you will be trapped!! They charged me 200 CAD despite my daughter never attended a single hour of any course! Can you imagine?! Yes, that just happened. One more point: They claim that there is a possibility to address complaints. In my experience, this was not true. The person who is supposed to resolve a complaint is a supervisor who repeats the same arguments against you. Be extremely careful! p.s. There is no objection against a reasonable cancellation policy. It is about clarity, and caring about the clients. Moreover, I clearly showed them which parts of the information BOTH on their website and on their software-generated receipts are unclear and misleading. They just did not want to admit it.
For $385, including tax and reg. fee you got 12 classes in a room that was terribly hot and plagued by constant banging of class upstairs. Equipment not adequate: you had to twist your spine if you were sitting on a stool, to reach the low rickety table on which you tried to balance your paints etc. and mix them. One student told me she went home with backache. I stood throughout the course. No wonder the drop out rate was so high. On the second week, I counted 19 students, towards the end there were seven. The Centre ought to acknowledge problem and make improvements.
