The Monarch Tavern

About

A Toronto landmark, The Monarch Tavern has been serving its loyal patrons the coldest draft and warmest memories since 1927.

Story

Tucked away between Toronto's thriving Dundas West and College Street strips, The Monarch Tavern has been serving its loyal patrons the coldest draft and warmest memories since 1927. As one of the oldest licensed establishments in the city, it's more than just a bar—it's a landmark!

Upstairs you'll find the archetypal neighborhood public house, with 16 local craft beers on tap, cask conditioned ale, and the best selection of bourbon whisky in the city. There's no place like The Monarch to watch a Leaf game on the big screen TV's, shoot some pool, or play a little pinball while you mingle with the crowd. You can still bring up a veal sandwich or slice of pizza from outside, but you may not want to after you've tried the delicious pub classics and Asian street food the gang from Bunz Urban Cuisine are now cooking up in our kitchen.

The main floor is the ultimate hangout for anyone who likes to stray a little off the beaten path. It's a great place to spend the day working on a laptop or meeting with friends over a fine cup of coffee. At night, the lights get turned down low and the room is transformed into a cool but totally casual cocktail lounge and event space, featuring an eclectic mix of live music, DJ's, and cabaret-style entertainment. With room for up to 120 people, you couldn't ask for a better place to bring a group or host your next catered affair.

So, whether you're a college student, construction worker, artist, or fashion model, everyone feels like royalty at The Monarch!

Came here to see a show and was not disappointed. Intimate space for mostly local artists to play, had a blast the whole time. Staff was nice, bartenders were great. Although the venue is kinda small there is a second bar upstairs and a patio too.
It was a great experience at the local bar. We came to see and listen Canadian bands, one of them was Bitter and Broke band. The place was clean with a good ventilation system. Bartenders were attentive and prices for the drinks were provided. I think it's important to support the musicians, community and people who run local business.
I was surprised to be able to hear Old Sea Brigade in this small comfortable, intimate setting. Was a new and great experience. It was an unexpected venue because it's located in the middle of a residential area. The beers were priced well compared to other venues, the washrooms very well kept extra star, and the whole atmosphere quite friendly and relaxed. I enjoyed it a lot despite the boxed in acoustics. Hopefully other well-known underground-indie bands come here, I will be on the lookout.
Went to see a show here last night and had a great time! The atmosphere is really good and the mix of the live performances were honestly top notch! They have a decent beer selection as well at both of the bars There's two floors. Totally worth hitting this place up if you want to see live music in a cool, lively setting.
Monarch Tavern best pub in Toronto. The food is AMAZING. 5 Star chef. Absolutely picture perfect. And the taste even better than it looks. Staff there are all amazing. Ya gotta try the food you'll be blown away!
Great club for live music. The staff was great. The bar upstairs was nice as well. Good pool table for 2 loonies. The house beer was tasty and cheap. Overall a great hang.
My whole time living in Toronto I had heard the name ‘Monarch’ synonymously with local music, but I just went for my first time recently and I was not disappointed. The downstairs bar & stage are all you need for smaller gigs, nothing fancy but at the same time not missing anything. The separate upstairs portion offers pool, sports games and a bit of a more relaxed vibe. Either way I can’t say anything bad about Monarch, would definitely grab a drink there any given night.
This little bar upstairs at The Monarch is a complete hidden gem. The staff are phenomenal and take incredible care of you every time you go. They've got great events like karaoke once a week and a fun-to-play, well balanced pool table upstairs. If you're looking for a good old fashioned bar, the kind that Toronto used to be known for, look no further.
How could I not like this place? I grew up 3 doors down, from birth until age 25. Whenever I return downtown this is definitely in my travels. For those who have never been, it's a rare and comfortable place oddly located in the middle of a residential neighbourhood.
Amazing spot come check it out have a drink and enjoy
