The Captain's Table

On Sunday we ate at the Captain's Table in Mobile, it the first time since celiac diagnosis 2 years ago that we went to a restaurant and my daughter was able to eat what we ate. They do almost everything on the menu gluten free(except the cod augratin and seafood chowder). They have a dedicated fryer. The lady who served us(also the owner) was extremely knowledgable. She told me her husband who has a gluten intolerance wanted to be able to offer safe options that were gluten free, and he is the head cook😁 All the food was amazing I would highly recommend it.

I enjoyed the restaurant overall. The decor, service and food was really good. Classic and traditional type fare in my opinion which is just fine. Well executed dishes and good offering. Pleased with our dinner and would certainly go again.

I have been coming home to Newfoundland each summer for the last 30 years and each year I make a point of trying out the seafood in a different restaurant. I usually fly, but this year I took the ferry to Port-aux-Basques and checked into the St. Christopher hotel upon arrival. Am I ever glad that I did as it afforded me the opportunity to dine at the Captain's Table. The best meal of fresh cod tongues and pan fried cod that I have ever had. Served with a smile and piece of blueberry pie to top it off. Moreover, service was not only pleasant, but fast (45 minutes from start to finish) and food was piping hot. Do not leave Port-aux-Basques without a meal at the Captains table. GDC

The food was really good. I had the Cod-au-Gratin and loved it. It wasn't too moist which is the way I like it. I tasted the wife's grilled Cod and thought that was awesome. There used to be a boat in front of the building that has since rotted and been taken away. The story behind the naming of the place is interesting and worth the read.

Upon entering, our party of three was eyed by two young female servers, neither of whom acknowledged us. Shortly after, an older lady told us she would be with us "in a few minutes". Five-ish minutes later, she came and told us there were no tables available, so we would have a 25 minute wait (she didn't explain why she made us wait for that information). We decided not to wait any longer, and based on the service we received, will not try again.
