Stunning! That’s what this museum is, absolutely stunning. It’s beautifully designed and well curated and you don’t need to be a canoeist to appreciate what it has to offer. The ambient sounds are soothing and immersive and the lighting is dimmed but adequate. If you’re in the area it’s a must visit. The lobby is large and bright with the cafe right there serving up great choices from the Silver Bean cafe.
I wasn’t sure I would be interested in looking at canoes but wanted to go to see the architecture and grounds but I went into the building and was pleasantly surprised at how well the museum has been designed. The lobby is bright and open and going upstairs to see the main exhibit space brought me past a window wall showing the storage space of all the canoes not currently in the main exhibit. What an excellent idea to allow visitors to see all the canoes in storage. Then going into the main exhibit space felt very emotionally engaging with the directed lighting and ambient sounds of birds and water. Very meditative. Plus the canoes are just stunning and from all over the world. Beautiful. Plus lots of infographics and descriptions and multimedia displays make it very interactive. Even has a central craft table where you can cut out a canoe template and decorate it. Not just for kids cause I did it! And I appreciated the focus on aboriginal communities and their focal contributions to the craft and history of the canoe in North America. Then I went outside to walk around the grounds, which were nicely designed with boardwalks and the most stunning dock I have ever seen. And it ties right into the local walking trail for those that want a longer walk. I didn’t eat at the museum but it was a nice space indoor and out. This museum is worth the visit.
I’ve been wanting to visit the museum for awhile and am so happy I finally did. I did not know what to expect but it was a great visit. There is so much history and different types of canoes throughout the world that you can learn about. I had no idea there would be so many canoes on display and the wide variety of canoes. There are literally hundreds of canoes in the building.
Stopped into the new CANADIAN CANOE MUSEUM in Peterborough....and...WOWWW!!!!nnFor those few of us who manage to remember the old warehouse and the great attempts to record the canoe's significance to the history of Canada....THIS new museum is an absolutely astounding institution which will definitely memorialize those efforts and that history.nnSupposedly looking like a canoe I kinda thought it looked like a lake freighter approaching me......and also.....a good reason why you should never try to treat or seal natural wood on exteriors.... the interior is overwhelming with the number of artifacts on display and their presentation.nnOne of most significant exhibits for myself as a former educator...and canoeist was the display for 1966 NFB film, PADDLE TO THE SEA.nnEven if you are not a canoeist, but in the Peterborough area.....YA GOTTA SEE THIS MUSEUM !!!! And a little food hint: there is a great little spot called THE SILVER BEAN CAFE which opens an hour before the museum and serves up some delicious breakfast delights as well as wraps and paninis and some great coffee!!!!!
The new location is stunning!!nYou definitely need to come see this place and experience this piece of Canadian history as it’s brought to life with this amazing museum and its beautiful exhibits.nnAnd the silver bean café in the same building is fantastic. You can enjoy delicious treats and really nice local high-quality coffee and their famous strawberry lemonade for a great price.
