If you are looking for the best place to eat in Burlington, The Big Spruce, is the best place to eat, even though it is in Richmond. The food is incredible. Everything we ate was delicious, fresh, a blend of summer flavors punctuated by local ingredients. And the service! Oh, what service! Friendly, patient, personable-our main server was Curtis, who we adored. In addition, literally every other person who helped us made us feel welcomed. Thank you to the incredible staff who made this the best meal in Chittenden County!
Tonight was our first dine in experience at The Big Spruce. We had takeout once when they first opened and it was just okay. Decided to give it a second chance. The place really needs someone to oversee the operation. Drinks were very slow to come out. Drinks also were short on the pour with an excessive amount of ice. We had to ask for silverware and napkins after our food arrived as did our neighbors. Our tacos were not distributed in the correct baskets, same for our neighbors. The mahi taco special was terrible. The fish was extremely fishy and cold. The black beans were dried out. The avocado and mushroom tacos were good. The coconut dessert was interesting. Not a good experience.
A chill place with serving delicious Mexican food. The tacos were very good with the scallop taco a special being a stand out along with the carne asada. Drinks were also good, especially the Margarita. Great outdoor space. Parking: Several lots for the street, clearly marked. Wheelchair accessibility: Sidewalk goes into a ramp making the inside accessible. Outdoor seating would be more difficult.
Dined here for the first time last night- what an amazing experience! Chevy our waitress was professional, patient, attentive, and extremely helpful! My water glass was never even half empty and she knew the entire menu like the back of her hand. She never rushed us even when it seemed like we were taking forever to even look at the menu. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. Clearly fresh ingredients, and yummy taste all around! Will definitely be back again to Big Spruce!
I met a friend here for a quick bite and a beer, neither of us had been here yet and thought it worth checking out. First impressions were good, Hostess was nice, as was our server. Drinks were quick enough. Though a small plastic cup filled with cubed ice and margarita was underwhelming for the price even if it was well made. We ordered food and chatted watching others be seated and order, some were served... finally our food came after what felt like a long wait for 3 Street tacos each. The food was good serving amount was small for the price. Each Taco is $5 or $6 with no sides. We left feeling OK about our experience but won't be rushing back.
Don’t miss this margarita/taco menu - something for everyone. Chef does some great specials, especially with fresh fish. Buck chuck oysters never disappoint. Check out the summer patio too, the fence was a great addition!
The service was fine, but it was really expensive and the food was really mid. My party had almost every type of taco, and a bunch of sides, and were really dissapointed with everything. The tacos were way too small for 6$. The hatchet across the street has much better food although I don't know if they have tacos. They're both owned by the same guy anyway, so I'm not like a competitor trying to get business. It was overall simply unsatisfactory. Parking: Limited parking
The space is cozy and cool with good food. I especially love the yucca fries and the churros. Never had a bad experience. I feel lucky to have so many great restaurant options in Richmond including Big Spruce!
So incredibly disappointing, the food was fine. The service was not, and I didn’t get a choice to share that with them since there’s a 15% service charge always added makes sense if you actually do your job. We had to track someone down for basically everything we needed, we were a table of two and there was ONE OTHER TABLE, and four servers hanging around. All 4 tables around us had old plates + trash on them the whole time we were there. Most of the time I would have to interrupt a conversation about some group chat to get a drink. Which were tiny and took so long to make even tho it was all they had to do. I sat and stared at the bartender and my server for 15 mins waiting for my check, jackets on and everything, while they chatted 5 ft away in an empty restaurant, with two other employees just hanging by the bar. At one point I saw BOH have to interrupt them, and they went back to their conversation after. What a birthday dinner! Also… leopard print leggings? And I’m forced to tip 15% at a place with no dress code and terrible service? I have NEVER not added a tip before, even with a service charge. This was hands down the worse restaurant experience I have ever had, and would have not expected it at such a “nice” place. Hatchet was so much better than this place, if you need a manager hit my line. Separately the place is pretty small and not very nice inside and their plates look nothing like the photos. Fish taco is the reason for the 1 star, it’s amazing.
Carnitas was tasty. Scallop special taco kinda bland although it sure sounded good. Spicy margarita was good enough to have two. Loved the outdoor seating; would be a fun place to have a family gathering on the way back from camping as a way to ease back into society. And with it being in Richmond, it is perfectly situated for that purpose.
