The Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew

About

The Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy celebrates each student’s individual abilities and unique spirit through a program that encourages creativity, enhances self-esteem, and sets the stage for a lifetime of achievement.

Story

Our school was founded in 1940 as the Yeshiva of Hartford. The Bess & Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford is the oldest orthodox Jewish day school in the United States. Originally located on Cornwall Street in Hartford, it moved to its present facility in 1974.

We are located on eight acres of spacious athletic fields and playgrounds in Bloomfield, Connecticut. The modern architecture of the building and its synagogue with domed ceiling are reminiscent of the city of Jerusalem. The warm and welcoming facility features a comprehensive library and media center, fully equipped computer and science laboratories, music room, gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria.

Our students represent the entire spectrum of Jewish observance. From Ganenu (the two-year old Program) through 8th grade, students come from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

The Bess & Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy was recognized as a National School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. The school’s Early Childhood Center was one of the first preschools in the area to receive accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The time allotment in our school between Hebrew and General Studies demonstrates in itself our philosophy that both aspects of our children’s education are equally important. We are concerned with helping each child develop into a sensitive and educated American Jew.

Our General Studies Department offers a well-rounded program in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, American and Jewish History, Science, with specialty teachers in the areas of Music, Art, Physical Education, Library, and Computer Science.

Our Judaic program offers an outstanding program in Jewish Laws and Customs, Talmud, Mishna and Hebrew Language, prophets and Jewish History.

The creation of the State of Israel is one of the seminal events in Jewish history. Recognizing the significance of the State and its national institutions, we seek to instill an attachment to the State of Israel and its people as well as a sense of responsibility for its welfare.

The Hebrew Academy is a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. In addition to an annual grant from the Federation, tuitions and year-round fundraising, activities, the Academy is able to continue to provide an excellent secular and Jewish education to the community’s children thanks to the generosity of its alumni, life members and scholarship donors.

Mission

To offer the highest level of Judaic and general education to children and families of all affiliations in the community, and to develop Jews who are proud of their heritage, involved in their community and devoted to G-d, Torah, Klal Yisrael, the Jewish people, and Eretz Yisrael, the land of Israel.
