The Bake Oven

About

Imported Foods, Bakery, Delicatessen and Cafe

Story

Since 1955 our business has been creating memories for many across Winnipeg and Manitoba and after 60 years we have continued to produce the same quality goods, all while dedicating ourselves to expanding in a direction that offers our customers a wide range of variety.

Apart from our bakery products which have been a staple for our business, we also offer many imported goods; primarily from The Netherlands and Germany. We have over 1000 imported products and are always bringing in new items. Our imports include authentic Dutch cheeses, a large variety of licorice, German baking supplies, Indonesian spices, Polish and German chocolates and so on!

The Bake Oven also has a restaurant, where we serve fantastic homemade food at a great price! Our homemade soups and fish and chips are just a couple of menu items customers constantly rave about, however it doesn't stop there. We also offer authentic Dutch foods such as the Kroket and Matjes Herring, any of which go great with our homemade french fries; and are available for order on skipthedishes.

Stopped in to check out some Dutch baked goods which I enjoyed. As well, finally found a place that sells halvah. Saw an assortment of meats, including blood sausage which I will be back to try. Restaurant hasn't reopened yet.
Very disappointed since new owners took over. Am dutch and lots products always carried new owners did not know how to get in. Such as goat cheese sheep cheese and other cheese variety seem to concentrate on gouda only. Instant boorenkol Instant Hotspot. No speculas red pack different ones thinner drier not same. Restaurant had no dutch soups ie pea soup no bami or Nasi goring and not open long time now. Why do they have to change things some things are good as they are.
Some serious home cooking here people! The service is awesome and the food is sooooo awesome! Been to the bake shop, really good, felt like a kid again in the place. Then came back for breakfast, have not had a better breakfast. Hash browns cooked perfectly, eggs very good. Oh ya and the coffee is good to. Did I mention staff is awesome? Ya they are!
Been looking for great mom and pop breakfast place in Winnipeg, I'm happy to report I've found it. The food quality it top knotch, prepared excellently and is super tasty. I'm not a sweets in the morning type, but their cinnamon toast is just so stellar that I am a convert. The other stand out for me was the bacon. I should also point out the staff, who are friendly and attentive. This is a hidden gem. Loved it and plan to make it a regular destination.
My mother worked there years ago when it was a real Dutch Store. It has really changed a lot and doesn’t have all the Dutch items they used to. Was very disappointed when I went last year cause most of the Dutch items I got all the time they have no more. Now I have to order my items from Ontario or BC. Hope they will get back to being a Dutch store.
What used to be a 5 star review has gone downhill drastically since they changed owners and regular kitchen staff were replaced by ones that will work for less. The food is inconsistent at best and the service isn't that great either. Here's a picture of their eggs Benny...usually it would have a poached egg on there that's over medium but with the staff turnover they've been replaced with students that have no prior cooking/serving experience...
First time eating in a restaurant in over a year and I was not left disappointed. The server was very friendly and the food was delicious. Prices are very reasonable and to top it off had a dessert to go from the bakery Mocha logs which also did not disappoint.
First time trying out The Bake Oven, ordered through Skip. We ordered the Battered Haddock w/ Coleslaw and a Reuben sandwich w/ Fries. The battered haddock was delicious, did not smell fishy, the batter tasted great and not too heavy. The tartar sauce was top notch and house made. The coleslaw is one of the best I’ve tasted, made with fresh dill. You can tell the coleslaw was made in house and not with store bought dressing. HOWEVER. We were extremely disappointed in the size of the Rueben $9.95 which did not come with any sides. Just the sandwich. Judging by the price we expected the sandwich to be quite substantial. $10 would get you a 12” foot long. The meat to bread ratio was disappointing for a Rueben and we did not feel like we got $10 worth of sandwich. See pictures and judge for yourselves. Otherwise it tasted good and the pickles appears to be made in house as well.
Love this shop. As with all bakeries I suggest an early visit for the best items. Imported dutch goods are a big draw.
As always this is a fantastic little Dutch store with a fantastic Dutch café. The place is always clean, food was excellent and the service was quick, even though this time they had a large group in while we were there. The staff is always friendly and tend to all of our needs. My Dutch mother loves this place, they have may products she has only ever seen in Holland.
