Strathcona High School

Story

Strathcona High School, colloquially referred to as Strathcona, is a public high school located in Edmonton, Alberta. The school was referred to as Strathcona Composite High School up until 2014 and was originally constructed to hold 1200 students, A modernization project was completed in 2015 and the school now enrolls approximately 1500 students.OverviewIn the early 1900s, the original Strathcona High School building was built and named after Lord Strathcona, a pioneering Scottish businessman and Canadian Parliamentarian, who was very influential in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.Strathcona Composite High School was opened in 1955 to accommodate the growing population of Edmonton. Many students from the closing Strathcona High School (later housing Old Scona Academic High School) were transferred to Strathcona Composite in 1955. It is located on Edmonton’s south side just south of the Old Strathcona district on a large piece of parkland. The school houses about 60 classrooms, several computer labs, two gymnasiums, a library media centre with networked CDs, a cafeteria, a fitness centre and a community pool operated by River City Recreation, a private contractor. Outside the school, the track team uses Rollie Miles Athletic Field. This field was also used as a training facility for the 1978 Commonwealth Games, the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, and the 2005 World Masters Games. Other facilities around the school include South Side Sports Arena, which Phys Ed classes use for the skating unit. School Team Name: The LordsSchool Motto: Ut Qui Ministrat (Latin: "As one who serves")School Colours: Scarlet & Gold School Mascot: Gaylord the Lion At the main entrance of the school, known as the Michener Entrance, an old lamp from the original Old Scona building is on during school hours and hangs over the Strathcona crest which, out of respect, students and staff will not walk across.

Great school. Many opportunities for athletics as well as fine arts. Very strong AP program - the largest in Canada. Made a lot of friends here and it felt really inclusive overall. Most of the teachers are really caring, there are a few bad apples but that is the case with all schools. Had an amazing high school experience here - would definitely recommend.
this schools a huge fever dream… everyday. No diversity at all, lots of hidden racism within the community and not much bullying. Very tight classrooms and weird people. Teachers cut marks off for no reason… Might leave depending on my mood- but don’t feel like staying at ALL.But it makes funny memories though. Different types of people and friend groups, it surprises me.
Had good times here. One of the best drama programs ever with an AMAZING teacher who's the department head. She's surely one-of-a-kind. School holds quite a few events. Even though every school is gonna have some rude students, I never had a bullying issue.
The running track is open to everyone who keeps it the way the school is maintaining it. It's a very place for anyone who wants to witness change in their physical activity. I walk 15kms on a daily basis and this track contributes to 7-8kms on a day to day basis. Good for everyone !
this high school is crazy and i am going to this school and i am only 8 yaers old.
In my opinion, Scona is the best school in Edmonton because of its legacy and tradition, as well as, encouraging a well rounded environment where academics, athletics, and arts are all promoted equally. The school spirit that exists at Scona allows school wide events, like Bikeathon to happen and fosters a sense of school pride and community. The connection between students and teachers sets Scona apart of other schools, with students and teachers alike engaging in athletic competitions, and school events. The AP program is phenomenal and allowed me to extend my knowledge beyond the regular curriculum and my English AP mark saved my grade during university admissions. The building was recently renovated so everything is modern. Scona also has a pool, a track, and a soccer field. Once a lord, Always a lord.
Good place but AP makes really no difference, it's just hyped up
Graduated from this school. Class options are teachers / staff are amazing.

Best high school ever!
