Story

Steambox was conceptualized about two years ago after Kayeon realized she got more of a rise from watching her friends fight over her dumplings than having CAD marathons at her daytime architecture gig. Her joy has always been in the kitchen, in culinary creation, and bringing people together. The other side of the coin is Amy: with a background in journalism, she helps with the marketing, communications, FOH, and logistical side of things. So there's a maker and a shaker ... buuuuut as the company grows we find that line is starting to blur!

The company is a labour of love project and is artisanal in the truest sense: dumplings can quite easily be produced through a machine; they can be filled with cheap ingredients, pumped with preservatives, and are notorious for being on the unhealthy side. We're trying to change that. Our dumplings are made by hand, using Ontario meat and poultry, and local produce whenever possible. We're also a source of a wide selection of vegan and gluten free dumplings in the city.

Apart from trying to redefine people's perception of the dumpling, we're also trying to make it accessible to as many people as possible. Whether it's allergies, observances, preferences, we try to accommodate. Living with allergies of our own, we understand the immense responsibility and trust that's placed on food makers.

In addition to pop-ups around Toronto, we operate out of Death in Venice at Queen and Bathurst. It's a magical little artisan food market that -serves as an incubator for up-and-coming companies. We offer lunch hot service on Mondays and Tuesdays (12 to 3pm), and folks can also buy our frozen bags anytime to take home (regular and GF). We're also stocked in a few other shops around the city, including:
