The History of Our School -Soon to Celebrate 50 Years!
St. Joseph's School opened in September 1964 with an enrollment of 118 students. Four teaching Sisters of the Order of Missionary Sisters of Christ the King, lovingly known as the "White Sisters" because of their white habits, came and taught at the school for three years.
The "White Sisters" left as St. Joseph's could no longer be defined as a missionary school. The Sisters of the Child Jesus were asked to come to Chemainus to help support the teaching ministry needed for the school. They have been involved with the school and the parish ever since. The teaching staff today is made up experienced, very well-qualified individuals who work together to create a unique learning environment for the students they serve.
Over the years, the student population of our school has fluctuated due to demographics and economics, but one thing has always remained the same: The commitment and dedication of our family and community members that help to make St. Joseph's a vibrant, loving, service-orientated learning community.
We will celebrate 50 years of excellence in Catholic education in 2014!
