Story

Slate Falls Outposts fly-in fishing started operating in 1986 with 6 outpost locations. 30 years later we are still going strong. We were industry leaders back in the day with “spare” coleman lanterns, mattresses not ‘foamies’, hand pump water at the sink, 3 burner counter top stoves instead of colemans, swede saws for the firewood and regular check flights. You flew in on a piston Otter or Beaver.

JUMP AHEAD A DECADE and we are still leading our industry with new motors each year, 4 burner stoves with ovens, on demand solar water at the sink, solar lighting everywhere, each cabin now has a propane chest freezer in addition to the propane fridge and we introduced our first solar fridge. Operating 10 sites now, all cabins with large decks, BBQ’s, cut up firewood and boat seats. You flew in on a Cessna Caravan.

JUMP ANOTHER DECADE and our ‘every 2 days service flights’ is one of our signature services. Firewood now resides in a wood shed, indoor plumbing, covered decks, sat phones are now available to take with you. Outside fish cookers and boat slip docks are everywhere. We dropped our camp volume strategically down to 6 and introduced the first turbine otter in the area.

JUMP FORWARD TO NOW and we have solar fridges and freezers at every location and the propane stuff is long gone. All the cabins have separate bedrooms and mostly no bunk beds anywhere. Ryan is assisting me full time in the continued development and maintenance of everything. Opening Hooker Lake up this year, rounding our total cabins up to 8, all the docks now have multiple hand rails installed for ease of getting in and out of the boat. Motors are all 4 stroke gas sippers now, with Lake St.Joseph getting all electric motors for the upcoming season! Two turbine Otters get the groups in and out safe and efficiently.

JUMP AHEAD 10 YEARS and we will still be here, leading the way in our industry and who knows what we will be offering by then!

Slate Falls offers float plane rides during the annual Blueberry Festival for reasonable prices. They just started a baloon drop for the kids with prizes in the balloons at the MNR Beach in 2018. There are sightseeing tour flights that end with dinner at Anderson's Lodge during tourist season. So many things to do in Sioux Lookout.
Had a fantastic trip into Arc Lake last Fall 9/4-9/13 and could not have been a better overall experience. Flights in and out ahead of schedule, fishing was lights out 700+ Walleye for 2 guys and not fishing hard at all and the accommodations are excellent! Ryan communicates early and often to ensure you have a tremendous week in the bush. Have been to many many outfitters in Ontario and Manitoba over the past 30+ years and Slate Falls is the best we have experienced to date. Can’t wait to fish the Root Bay Outpost in 2022!!!!!
Great group of staff that Ryan has with him. Ryan makes it a priority to put a great product and experience forth. Knowledgeable in their craft, decades of experience. Providing high end service in this industry from my experience. I have done a number of fly-in fishing trips and nothing has come close to matching Ryan's level of service, and product,. What I mean by product the camps are just awesome well set up and the boat slips with paths to the cabins are great after a long day on the Lake. Oh not to mention the lakes have some of the best fishing. I was in Root Bay in 2020 and making another trip back in 2022. So looking forward to it!
Slate Falls is a first class operation. The Cabins are excellent...equipped with everything you need ...clean and comfortable. The fishing is excellent. The service is first class. I recommend SFO to anybody looking for a “bucket list” fishing trip. We have made it an annual indulgence.
Out standing facilities. Great owner and right hand man Ryan. I and my son Craig and for many years my other son Doug have been with Verne since 1993. A fly in that you can count on for safety, convenience, and outstanding fishing. First class all the way. Hope to have a few more years. Would recommend Slate Falls to any one.
Over the last 8 years I’ve done at least one trip a summer with Slate Falls. The group I go with has been going for over 15 years. You never have to worry if things will work, they always do. Vern and Ryan do a great job. The fishing is great and we see various forms of wildlife while out fishing. It’s a great escape from the busy life everyone has at home. If you are a hardcore fisherman or if you are a casual fisherman like myself this is great trip. A couple guys in the group take their wives up in August and the wives love the scenery and the calm, along with catching some fish as a bonus.
Went to slate falls with my two brothers, my nephew and and friend four years back. We stayed at st Joseph outpost. This outfitter exceeded our expectations on every level. First of all- the walleye fishing in this lake is crazy good and keep in mind this lake is massive! We jigged points and structure with success all day every day. The cabins at st Joseph at 5 star for outpost. Clean, powered with solar, and very organized. The docks even have hand rails which is rare. The camp also has an attendant that stays at a separate place on the island who takes care of everything for you. If you are looking to catch 100 fish per day and fly into a paradise where memories are made then I strongly suggest you call slate falls.
Slate Falls Outposts provides the best wilderness adventure. Verne, Andrea, and Ryan have continuously improved EVERYTHING in each location. Solar lighting, awesome refrigeration, comfy mattresses, professional cookware, dry boats with dependable motors, and anything else you could imagine! In addition, they are the nicest and most accomodating people you will ever meet.
Don’t even consider going anyplace else, Slate Falls is top notch. Ryan and Vern keep everything in 100% working order. We’ve stay with them at least a dozen times, and we’ve only had positive experiences. We stayed at other outposts before we found Slate Falls, and Slate Falls we now know is the gold standard for the industry.
We stayed at minis East camp and were not disappointed. Clean and comfortable plenty of room for you and your things. Fishing was great one of our best spots was a whole two minute boat ride. We had fish every day no problem. Definitely going back, we made reservations for the next year when we were checking out. First rate all the way.
