About

Shouldice Hospital, the world leader in hernia repair since 1945

Story

Our History: A Tradition of Excellence

Shouldice® Hospital was established in 1945 by Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice (1890-1965), inventor of the Shouldice repair. Dr. Shouldice developed his innovative technique during World War II, to help young men who were unable to enlist in the military because of their hernias. His unique repair method improved surgical results and reduced recovery time, quickly restoring the young recruits to physical fitness for military training.

As news of Dr. Shouldice’s success spread, there was a growing demand for hernia surgery. But doctors and hospital space were scarce after the war and wait times for surgery were long. Dr. Shouldice responded to the problem by founding his own hospital.
Founding Shouldice Hospital

Shouldice Hospital opened with a single operating room and a waiting list of 300 eager patients. Working with only a nurse, secretary and cook for support, Dr. Shouldice repaired two hernias a day. Requests for his remarkable surgery grew and the hospital soon expanded, adding more staff and more buildings. In 1953, Dr. Shouldice purchased a beautiful country estate in Thornhill, Ontario, just minutes from downtown, which eventually became the hospital’s new home.
A world-class institution

Today, two generations later, Shouldice Hospital has grown far beyond its early beginnings to become the world’s leading centre of excellence for hernia repair. Dr. Shouldice’s son, Dr. Byrnes Shouldice, and daughter, Mrs. W.H. Urquhart continued their father’s legacy. Dr. Byrnes Shouldice followed in his father’s footsteps as a surgeon at Shouldice in 1961 and is currently President and Chairman of the Board. Mrs. W.H. Urquhart has been involved in management as Vice President and director on the board since the hospital was founded, along with her husband, the late William Urquhart, President and Chairman of the board until his demise in 1998. With the support and guidance of the founder’s son and daughter and their respective families, Shouldice has developed into a modern, 89-bed facility, with five specialized operating suites, an expert team of hernia surgeons and nurses, and a dedicated staff of about 150 people, all working to meet the needs of patients with hernias.
Looking to the future

Ideally suited to deliver exceptional results for hernia patients, Shouldice continues to reflect the progressive outlook and traditional values of its founder. Our 99.5% success rate in hernia surgery has long been the benchmark for medical professionals internationally. Shouldice’s reputation has been built on an holistic approach to patient care and its philosophy continues to emphasize the well-being of mind and body as the key to a healthy recovery. Over the years, skilled and innovative surgeons have refined the Shouldice repair, ensuring that at Shouldice Hospital, surgical procedures meet the highest standards in medical care.

For well over half a century, the Shouldice name has been synonymous with excellence in hernia repair and we are committed to maintaining that tradition of quality and service in the years ahead.

Dr. Megan Melland-Smith did my hernia repair surgery at Shouldice Hospital. She was very professional. She is the president of the Canadian Hernia Society. She came with the nurse in my room to make sure I am waking up good after surgery with IV sedation. She visited again later to give me instructions post-surgery. I had little pain and discomfort since the day of surgery, I didn't need any pain medication after second day. No need for cold packs either. Three weeks after and I am feeling better and better. I hope everything will be good with help from God and Lord Jesus Christ.nMany thanks to Dr. Megan Melland-Smith and her team. Nurses were very good.nAlso many thanks to Dr. Ayse Yilbas for admission exam, Dr. Lee for discharge exam, to Mr. Greg D'Andrea for schedule and all information, to nurses and to accounts and administration and other hospital members. The food was very good and appropriate.nMay God and Lord Jesus bless Dr. Megan Melland-Smith and her team at Shouldice Hernia Hospital.
Best hospital I ever been to, I had 2x hernias fixed here over my one week stay.nnSuper friendly nurses, waitress’, doctors, surgeon Dr. Simmons, admins, etc. Very well kept and clean facility. The food was amazing and healthy, fed 4x times a day, during my week stay the food was always different too! Amazing chef! Everything made from scratch!nnDay of the surgeries was easy peasy, the whole process clearly explained, constant care and check-ups, everyone by your side every step of the way.nnIf you have hernia anywhere in the world I’d recommend coming here. I ran into people from all over the world here… France, Costa Rica, Texas, Bahamas, Alberta, Manitoba, etc. This place is world known, and it comes at no surprise - everyone I talked to from my friends and family had nothing but praise about their experience.nnThank you Shouldice Staff for the pleasant experience.
I cannot express how great this place is. The staff here are simply amazing. The surgeons are world class and leaders in their field. The grounds are also fantastic and a great place to get your mobility back while enjoying the sights of the beautiful gardens. I can't thank you guys enough for everything you have done for me during my stay here. Hoping never having to come back, but if I did need another hernia repair, without hesitation, this would certainly be the place hands down. Thanks for everything
I got my groin bilateral hernia repaired between March 16-21, 2025.nFirst time in hospital but my experience at Shouldice was wonderful. Both surgeries went as planned and smooth. It's a fantastic place! I walked around building every day except two surgery days. Food is excellent, home made, very delicious. I got breakfast, lunch, dinner and night snacks! More than enough. Big thank you to my surgeons ; Dr. Slater and Dr. Ross. Also big thanks to all nurses, psw staff, cleaners and of course kitchen stuff. After second surgery on Wednesday I got a bit fever after 10pm but my nurse from the third floor Andrea was beside me to control the fever and blood pleasure to make sure I'm fine. She's so kind with beautiful smile.. Possibly the best nurse around. Shouldice Hospital should be proud to have an employee like Andrea.nMany people says it's like a spa, but I said it's like all inclusive Carribean resort..
I had my Epigastric hernia repair surgery on Aug 1, 2025. It was a great success. My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Simmons, the caring nurses, friendly staff, and the talented kitchen team who served up Michelin-worthy meals. Thank you.
