Story

Established in 1847, Herb Shaw & Sons Ltd. has been producing top quality pine lumber and utility poles for nearly 2 centuries making the company one of the oldest, family businesses in Canada. Loyalty, a strong customer base, dedicated workers, and a strong belief in forest stewardship are just a few qualities that keep Herb Shaw & Sons one of the most respected businesses in the industry.

Lumber Products

Lumber is air dried between 11% and 15%. Kiln dried lumber is available at various moister contents using one of our 2 states of the art direct fire kilns. Grades are determined in accordance with Canadian Standards established by the National Lumber Grade Authority, approved and enforced by the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board (CLSAB) and by the American Lumber Standard (ALS) board of Review.

Pole Products

World renown for top quality red pine utility poles, Herb Shaw & Sons produces 45, 000 poles annually ranging from 23-80 feet in length. The company has a long-standing relationship with Stella Jones Inc. leading North American producer and marketer of pressure treated wood products. Poles are mainly used by electrical and telecommunications companies within Canada and the United States.

Shavings and Chips

Bi-products, including bagged wood shavings, wood chips, sawdust, and mulch are produced and sold within their respectable market. Barely a speck of our trees go unused!

Environmental Responsibilities

Herb Shaw & Sons derive their prosperity from the forests and as a result they employ good forestry techniques, putting sustainable forestry at the forefront. The company believes in sustainable forestry not only for economical purposes but also out of respect and responsibility of our forests and future generations to come.

For these reasons Herb Shaw & Sons is proud to be accredited with various government associations aimed at monitoring and controlling harvesting practices. These associations include:

FCS Certified: Herb Shaw & Sons have obtained its FCS Certification, allowing customers to know our products come from properly managed and monitored forests that have met and exceeded strict environmental standards.

Sustainable Forest License (SFL): The Company is a shareholder in Ottawa Valley Forest SFL and the Mazinaw-Lanark Forest SFL. As a shareholder in these managed forests HSS obtains harvesting rights in return assumes responsibility for Crown Forests according to the Crown Forest Sustainability Act.

Canadians Lumbermen's Association: This organization accredited with Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board and the American Lumber Standard Committee, certifies lumber graders and provides supervisory services to its members allowing softwood lumber to be stamped as certified material.
