Was recently at Shanghai Alley for lunch. Friends had recommended them. Had the most exquisite dish called "Charred Cabbage" which has really interesting with complex flavours. Highly recommend it with a side of rice. The serving is enough for 2 for lunch. Staff super friendly. Chef stopped by to ask my opinion and I couldn't stop raving about it. Will definitely make the trip out there from Toronto to have this dish again. Many thanks!! Veronica
It was the first time to visit a restaurant in Oakville, and I was soooo satisfied with the food and the service!!! I highly recommend this place. The food price is reasonable, and the portion is pretty enough too. Also, the mood of the restaurant is perfect. I fell in love with the cozy and aesthetic inside. What is more, there is a server who can speak Korean. If you are Korean or able to use the language, you can get help from her! She was very kind and friendly. My friend and I had a really nice time here. I would like to visit again here next time!
First dinner experience with Shanghai Alley last night. The food we ordered was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. All was fresh and perfectly cooked. We will definitely come again! Highly recommend!
I got the braised buns because it was an unique menu item that I haven't seen anywhere else. Each bun averaged out to be around $3 and although it is a little bit pricey, the pork filling made it so worth it. It was packed with pork that had a variety of textures and the flavor was great. It almost felt like I was eating chinese pancakes with pork belly. I'm definitely interested in going back to try more items!
A very specialty restaurant run by the owner. Delicious Shanghai food, fresh and healthy ingredients. Excellent chef, nice and sweet waitresses. Will definitely come back again!
Super delicious! My friends all loved the food so much and ate a lot! They said this is the best Chinese restaurant they have ever been to! Thanks a lot for the delicious food and very nice and friendly service! Will definitely come back!
Update reply to the owner: First I couldn’t leave a Google review right away because it’s not my full time job to comment on Google map. Second, you were asking why I didn’t complain about meat quality that day when I dined in. In fact, I did actually ask the waitress if the baos and dumplings are freshly made after I felt the unpleasant taste of the stuffing. Quote on quote, in Mandarin, she said “No, there’s no time to make freshly-made baos and dumplings.” However, it’s not that difficult to admit your faults and try to improve it. It’s ridiculous that you have the audacity to tell me come in making complaints. I don’t feel comfortable and I don’t have time to do it. As part of the management team, you should really taste your own menu and retrain your staff. Third, I understand it must be expensive for the property in this location, but the quality and taste of the food really needs some hard work. Good atmosphere. Overpriced for low quality foods. Stuffing of baos smell very off like old meat or maybe just not fresh. Waitress kinda rush customers to leave by bring the bill in front of ur face without asking.
The Coconut Curry Salmon was one of the best dishes I have had at any restaurant. The salmon was cooked perfectly! Crisp on the outside, moist on the inside and a perfect medium. The accompanying bok choy was exceptional and I could have eaten a platter of it. This dish alone made the visit worthwhile. I can’t stop raving about it! The curried lamb baos were also hot and tasty. The rest of our experience was unfortunately not that great. Our Mapo tofu was dropped off in a matter of minutes and no one came by with the rice we ordered or anything for almost 15 minutes. The wrong dumplings were dropped off then taken away and the manager decided to loudly yell at our server for the mistake at our table. The wrappers of the chicken and shrimp dumplings were tough and hard. The mapo tofu lacked flavour. Service was spotty, slow, and mostly absent.
Went in for lunch on weekend, it wasn’t too busy and we got seated right away. Restaurant is small but neat and organized. They have dinning area and bar section, probably more for dinner or evening hours. We ordered few based on the owner’s recommendations and online reviews: to be honest, the buns were slightly plain but again if they were not seasoned with MSG then I guess it’s not a bad thing? The “lion head” and “shanghai fried rice with salted vege” were okay, lion head was actually pretty flavourful. Owner introduced the history of the restaurant and told us the recent dining competition which they are pretty confident to be in the final top 3 list good for them. Food serving time was comparably longer, server was very friendly and attentive. The bill was slightly pricey and that was one thing I didn’t feel comfortable that they actually fixed 15% tip on the bill. I understand they offered good service and the business was along lakeshore street so everything is more expensive, but I would rather to have my right to choose what to give for tips instead of being “forced” to pay for certain amount. It wasn’t a big deal but just expressing my thoughts.
Knowledgeable and Inviting staff. Traditional Shanghai cuisine. Fully stocked bar with a great signature cocktail. 10/10 will go again!
