This Facebook page exists to promote intelligent discussion within the Selkirk College community and those who are interested in its processes. We value comments in our social media platforms and see commenting as a way for everyone to participate and contribute in the Selkirk online community. To improve and guide the dialogue, we’ve put together some basic commenting guidelines for the Selkirk community.
When making moderation decisions, we will take these guidelines, as well as the context in which comments are made, into account. We also recognize that this is your community as much as it is ours and we share this information in an effort to be transparent about our moderation process and why certain comments may be removed.
By commenting, you agree to our principles of commenting:
- Remember to keep it legal. You should not post comments that are libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive or contain otherwise illegal content. We do encourage both positive and negative feedback about the university and its services, as long as its aims are constructive. We are looking to create and maintain a dialogue, not call each other names and get nowhere.
- Be respectful. You should not threaten or abuse, written, verbally, or otherwise, other participants. You should not make other participants feel unsafe or unwelcome. You should keep your language relatively appropriate for a university community. Hate speech is strictly forbidden and will result in your comments being removed and a possibly permanent ban on future commenting. Understand that debating and attacking are two entirely different things.
- Be relevant. Your comments should be on-topic and not self-promoting, although promoting events and causes related to Selkirk and its community is more than welcome. Page postings should encourage discussion about important issues to the college community. Please don't post any far off topic or unduly repetitive.
- Be aware. The page owners reserve the right to delete comments we feel go against developing a sense of community. We also reserve the right to ban users from commenting at any time should they prove disruptive to the page by constantly spamming it.
- Think about your own privacy. To protect your own privacy and others, please do not include any personal information including phone numbers and email addresses in the body of your comment. Please do not share personal information about others, including pictures. We ask that you don't invade anyone's privacy or impersonate anyone. Facebook requires us (pursuant to section 5.7 of their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities) to notify you that by posting comments on this site you are consenting to the collection of the information you provide. We will collect information that we solicit that relates directly to and is necessary for an operating program or activity of Selkirk College. Personal information that is collected is done so under the authority of s.26(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
