The best mexican food north of British Columbia! This authentic Mexican spot stands out for their traditional dishes and daily house specials quite hard to find in this latitude. What I admired the most is the attention to detail for the best experience: beautiful decor and atmosphere, maximum sanitary measures cleanest washroom in Whitehorse! and top notch customer service! Thank you for an excellent evening!
If you are craving for some authentic Mexican cuisine, this is the place! The staffs were friendly and helpful. Food was more enjoyable out in the patio. A sparrow was trying to snatch our nachos. Their portions weren’t generous but just enough to feel stuffed. They have specials written on the whiteboard, so make sure you check it out. They do not take Amex.
I am from Ontario. If you told me I had to travel 4000 kilometres to eat authentic Mexican food, I would assume you would be talking about eating in Mexico. Perhaps the last place I would expect to have an excellente Mexican meal would be in Whitehorse. I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to Sanchez Cantina. I was visiting a friend and they suggested this restaurant. I ordered the highest level of heat for my dish and it was increible. Often times when eating spicy food, they try to make it hot. At Sanchez Cantina, I got the heat, and the flavour. This was one of the best Mexican Meals I have eaten in my life. And I have been to Mexico...three times. The staff was exceptionally friendly and they even let us stay late.
Service was very good, fresh food at very reasonable prices. I had the “Gringa” with steak and the enchiladas with chicken, sauces were full of flavour and the food was very delicious. A “ must try” if you come to Whitehorse for a visit. I picked up dessert from the restaurant today, I tried the Flan which was very good. It wasn’t too sweet just perfect.
This was the second time going to the Sanchez Cantina during business trips. The food is so good and authentic Mexican food. Service is very good to. It does get busy.
Difficult review for me to write without a bias. I think this is a good spot but it's missing some key Mexican dishes for me to say it would be a 5 star place elsewhere but in Whitehorse and without another Mexican place this is definitely a 5 star place . The execution of the dishes is excellent and the meal is authentic and could go against any other Mexican restaurants in large cities. I also would love it to be open on Sundays for some hangover style foods mexico has like a pozole or barbacoa tacos. I guess I cannot hold that against them but if you want to make me and others fanatics of your restaurant open Sunday and maybe expand the menu to include some key dishes. I would kill for Barbacoa, Choriqueso or Al pastor tacos. Maybe even some menudo or elotes/esquites in a cups for special occasions.
Policy and server earned a poor rating. Texted for 5pm res. Response was only 7:30 & 8pm available. Might get a table for 4 walk in if weather was nice. outdoor by the trash dumpsters in the parking lot. Decided to try an early bird at 4:40p. Rain was threatening. Seated indoors immediately but informed we had to be out by 6:30. I suggested that would be decided by the speed of service. Lights were out in the back. Asked server if they could be turned on like the ones in the photo of the front section. Was told people just use a flashlight in their phone. The switches were on the wall above the end of our table. About 1/2 hr later a hostess came back and turned the lights on for other patrons. Our server ran into my chair hard no less than 8 times during our meal which took 1/2 hr to get. Now for the food. Three burritos were barely warm. I had Coctel de Camerones. It was good for a non traditional version of the dish. Everyone said the burrito taste was good but needed to be hot. The drinks, margaritas and white sangria, were reported to be good.
Hands down the best Mexican food in town. It is usually very busy thanks to the amazing food it serves. Hence, it’s best to reserve in advance during busiest time of the week.
We visited and was seated. Our order was taken and really that was the last we were directly talked to. We had to ask for updates on our order. Sat outside but got cold so asked for seats inside and waitress said she would check. Never returned. We found our own table insider. After over an hour of waiting for food we asked another server for status on our meal. Were told it would be at least another 15 to 20 minutes so we canceled order and left. I understand being short staffed, but the lack of attention or concern was more then we could take.
Sorry but I am not impressed with this place. Was so busy when we came but luckily We made a reservation earlier so we could have a table but not only tht, took forever to get our food, tacho and gringa. The foods look fresh but the rice? Taste and look like "uncle ben" rice... the staffs super friendly. I don't think we will be back here...
