This park is not just a "one stop" location. It covers a large area of the island, mostly on the southern point. There are trails, beaches, cliffs, water views, a light house and the old forts. All located within an easy drive of each other. So plan on spending a day exploring them all as I did. If you want to camp, options are limited. San Juan county park is the main option with limited spaces that fill up quickly so plan accordingly. Another note, the ferries are currently experiencing boat and personnel shortages so ferries are not necessarily on time and are also frequently cancelled. Patience and flexibility are a must! You can must reserve your spot for the ferry but know that even that is not a guarantee.
A two part national historic site. The American camp is prairies and lots of walking trails with views. English camp is smaller. Not manned. Not as visited. View is of a bay.
Several images posted by reviewers are inaccurate. This is a part of the park that is mostly clear of trees. When you drive southeast towards the park on Cattle Point Road, the side along the beach is mostly clear, but the side more inland is residential. There's a wonderful small parking area along the side of the road near this Google map marker that's easily missed. When you take the trail, you'll get to walk along a long trail that leads to the Cattlepoint Lighthouse. It's a beautiful walk along the cliffside, but not for those afraid of heights.
Wonderful views and easy walking trails to the lighthouse
Honestly not much of a park, not like a beach, However, the abandoned, locked-up lighthouse was sorta cool
Really beautiful hiking trails at both camps, and fascinating history. It's open really late too, so if you want a good sunset hiking place, I'd recommend American Camp, since you have pretty spectacular views of the Olympic Range. Definitely worth while to visit both camps!
The hikes are not for beginners they can be a bit harder. But totally worth it!
We had a great time so much history
Love this beautiful place.peaceful and quiet great for camping
The San Juan island is very beautiful and are so pretty. Only thing I didn't like is that all of the stores close at 5 or 6 pm so when tourists are there you have to really do time management with every shop you go to. The island itself is absolutely gorgeous, just wish the shops were open longer.
