Rickshaw Theatre

About

Keeping you up to date with event listings, contests, photos and everything else for The Rickshaw Theatre.

Story

The Rickshaw Theatre, formerly known as the Shaw Theatre, was built in 1971 as part of the Shaw Brothers' worldwide movie empire. By the mid eighties, the Shaw Theatre closed its doors as interest in the Kung-Fu movie genre waned.

The theatre sat more or less dormant until David Duprey reopened it as a live music venue in 2009 and renamed it the Rickshaw Theatre. Realizing the Rickshaw's potential for being an outstanding music venue, Mo Tarmohamed came on board in the summer of 2011 followed by Stephen Lyons to help run the operations.

The theatre boasts possibly the best sight-lines of any music venue in the city as well as a quality sound system and the capacity can be easily configured to accommodate 200 to 600 people. The re-opening of the theatre also marks an important step in the ongoing revitalization of the Downtown Eastside.

"The Rickshaw is a Vancouver institution, beloved by both bands and live music lovers. We’d like to think that it’s because the staff are all live music fans themselves and they enhance the concert goers' experience. The venue boasts great a sound system and has possibly the best sight-lines for a venue of its size."

I went to see Altın Gün here, a Turkish band. They were incredible and the Rickshaw was an amazing venue to see them in! Very spacious, old historic style theatre with an interesting past : the place has so much character and any chance I have to go back I will certainly be taking it. Huge fan of the Rickshaw! If you can, check out one of your favourite bands when they play here, you will not be disappointed!! Awesome time :
The Rickshaw has only gotten better and better over recent years, unlike most local venues. This Vancouver treasure has put on most of my favorite shows, and has a great layout with lots of places to sit, as well plenty of standing room for a mosh pit or dance floor, depending on the style of music. Drinks are surprisingly reasonably priced for a music venue! Don't let the area intimidate you... It's safer than you think, and people are generally super nice. Even the ones who look like they need a shower. Just make sure to have fun if you find yourself headed to the Rickshaw!
The show was amazing, but the crowd... wasn't great. Multiple full beers were being thrown around the audience, throughout the night. Thankfjlly i was upstairs, but people were throwing them up into the air and hitting the lighting fixtures.. the place was very crowded and hardly anyone was wearing a mask, including staff. Overall it was a fun experience, I would go again of there was an artist I really wanted to see, but there are much better venues
Extremely pleased the friendly staff let us in sooner than expected. Not a very nice area to be walking around in. Pee, feces, garbage, blankets, tents, panhandlers, zombies, etc.. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking. We parked in a barbwired residential area, and didn't get towed, like we did earlier in the day.An adventure for sure..The venue was super cool and the sound, perfect. Awesome place, killer show!! Cannibal Corpse. Too bad about the situation outside. 4/5
After 2 years of hell. Coming back to this place was a perfect reintroduction into society. There's space to be found for the uncomfortable and if sharing sweat is your bag, there is room for that too. Staff and visitors are always friendly and in a good mood. Sound blasts through you with upmost quality in a great setting.
Attended the 14th annual KFB Christmas party and had a great experience. Staff/Security was very friendly and professional, and the venue sounded great. Covid-19 protocols were in place and I was impressed with how respected they were by everyone attending.
There isn’t a better concert venue in downtown Vancouver Commo… what? when one talks about cultural impact. The staff are all super sweet and friendly, but I just wish the alcohol was a bit more affordable. The balcony is pretty cool also.
Great sound, sight-lines, staff and atmosphere. Surrounding neighborhood is rough but once inside its all smiles. The legend Mo provides an invaluable service to Vancouver's music scene.
Great place to see a show. The staff were great, friendly as they need to be for a lovely dive venue. But I say dive in the right way, places that rarely exist anymore. These are the places where great things can happen, great shows specifically. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of its location, smack dab in the heart of Hastings. That being said, there wasn't a bunch of homeless people hanging out in front of causing any problems. I'd go back.
I have been going to this venue for years, mostly for metal shows. The organizers bring in so many amazing acts and always keep a no-nonsense but friendly atmosphere. The crowds have a great energy and the venue is small enough that you can often hang out with band members after their set. The venue is a bit rough around the edges, but that's how it keeps its edge. A literal institution of DTES, hope it remains an institution for many years to come! Rock on!
