Retro Gusto
"A pizzeria and bar on the north end of Preston street. Serving a Roman style pizza "Tonda", traditional roman fried snacks, salumi, cheeses and other small plates. A small wine list that will be in constant rotation, strictly Italian classic cocktails, a wonderful gin & tonic selection and beautiful amaro's from around Italy. The warm, cozy, dimly lit dining room with an open kitchen will be the perfect place to do the only thing that matters; eat good food, drink good wine and have a good time with friends."

Holy moly this was an excellent experience. Food was outstanding, fast, fresh, and delicious! Atmosphere is amazing, gives of an 80s diner vibe. Cocktails were strong and delicious too. Had 2 appetizers and 2 mains pizzas will be back 10/10Food: 5/5
Went here on Sunday for the first time and I’m absolutely in love! The menu options, as well as wine and cocktail list were absolutely amazing. I mostly went with the server’s recommendations, and every single one was spot on. Service was warm and welcoming, it made for a homey experience. Still thinking about the special with the whipped ricotta, and the glass of red wine I had! Every dish had such a special spin on it, made with love and local ingredients. I’ll 10/10 be back. Would recommend this place to anyone! UPDATE: Went back twice more after writing this review, service was still as outstanding, and all other items I've tried were amazing!
This place has so many wonderful facets of a Good Friday night meal. The ambiance, service, general warmth and of course delicious food makes for a very successful outing. The servers are very kind and social and you can feel the care and attention that goes into the food. If you’re a foodie who seeks atmosphere and vibes this is a great spot. We’ll be back Arnold voice.
2nd time coming here, it was just as delicious as the first! Amazing ambience and energy, good service, and delicious pizza. I am glad the neighbourhood has a spot like this. We got the zucchine and the salamino pizza, plus a Negroni and a gin martini. Everything was excellent. Note that the pizza crust is very very thin thinner than Tennessee Willems, however it is still great! Only other note is I wish they had one more appetizer, something fresher and lighter than a charcuterie style plate or fried croquette maybe another salad, something vegan or veggie centric? Mushrooms? They do have a radicchio salad but we didn't try it. Next time!!
Amazing pizzas! Best margarita I’ve had in a very long time. Great service and beautiful space
Great authentic style Pizza. Ordered the Suppli to start and ordered a pizza each for dinner. Very cool atmosphere with retro music. Negroni’s and other cocktails are a tad pricy for the simplicity of them, but at least their beer is average price. Would return again
I had a thin funghi pizza, cannoli and a small soda for $55, including gratuity. It is a bit pricey for what it is, but the food and the service was good. The place is small and cozy. You can park after 5pm in the parking lot next to it on Somerset, which was a relief! Even though I didn’t have wine, they have a good wine list.
First time this evening and sat at the bar. Took the advice and tried everything they recommended, no favourites, it was all delicious. The homemade bread was perfect. I was so impressed with the owner who took the time to chat with us and even cleared a few tables. I recommend making a reservation but it was not crazy busy.
The pizza is only great by comparison to the rest of the city's. I found it difficult to enjoy the charcuterie knowing there was zero effort on the kitchens part, other than plating. The strips of pepperoni were tough and dry, the wine list fairly limited and the service was uncomfortable. Gotta love having long, fake nails parading around the food you're about to eat. Asked to leave our table after declining ordering desert, moments after we had finished eating main course. When pointed out other tables were open, the timelimit for two people, stated in OpenTable was referenced for why we were being kicked out. I guess even with 10 minutes left on our ticking clock, of 90 minutes, where a solid collective 50 minutes was dedicated to waiting to be seated, ordering, waiting for food and drinks, we really needed to have our last sip of wine slammed instead of an attempt to enjoy. With a time constraint like that, I don't think there would be time to even consider a third course. I would recommend either telling tables about this time constraint, or, having servers directed to encourage placing orders with the kitchen a bit more quickly. Or maybe, not run your restaurant using guidelines from a generic reservation app? I'll still do a pick-up pizza from Farinellas, but the service, both FOH and BOH here was not worth the extra money. Edit for response to owner; the bread had to be ordered separately. And there are other reviews here and open table complaining about the 90 minute time constraint as well.
The supplì are outstanding. The cannoli are likely the best in Ottawa. The pizza toppings are delicious. My only complaint is with the pizza crust. Depending where you are in Italy, pizza can be thin or super thin. At Retro Gusto, the pizzas are so thin that you are barely aware that the crust is even there. I'd prefer a slightly thicker crust. But that's just my taste.
