The mission of Potluck Café Society is to transform lives by creating jobs and providing healthy food for people living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).
As a non-profit social enterprise and registered charity, Potluck Café Society operates Potluck Café & Catering to help fund and support its community programs, including the creation of jobs for neighborhood residents with barriers to traditional employment.
Potluck is widely regarded as a social enterprise leader in Vancouver and abroad, and has received a number of awards for its many achievements and success.
Potluck was founded in 2001 with the goal to create an inclusive and healthy Downtown Eastside neighbourhood through grassroots community economic development. Potluck’s core strategies to end the cycle of poverty and address the needs of the most nutritionally vulnerable in the community are achieved through solutions that promote employment and nutrition.
Our cohesive and holistic approach to improving the quality of life for individuals in the Downtown Eastside include the following 5 programs:
• Creating jobs with on-the-job training and life skills support for DTES residents with barriers to traditional employment.
• Meal Program that serves up to 30,000 free, nutritious meals each year to nutritionally vulnerable DTES residents.
• DTES Kitchen Tables Project, led by Potluck Café Society and working in collaboration with residents and community stakeholders, to increase the availability, affordability, and choice of healthy food for DTES residents while creating jobs in the community.
• Community Kitchen where neighborhood residents prepare and enjoy a meal together while learning cooking and nutrition skills in the Potluck Café.
• Recipes for Success that shares our unique employment support model with businesses interested in hiring individuals with barriers to employment.
