We had a great experience camping here. We arrived late on Friday around 7pm just in time to buy firewood. Then Saturday we were able to get wood til 4pm. The ranger gave us lots of maps and helpful suggestions for where to check out certain trails and for things to do around Black River Falls. There weren't many people camping and we didn't get any bug bites at all, barely saw any mosquitoes despite our campsite having standing water. We brought our own drinking water because we heard it's brown so we didn't bother. The pit toilets are gross but that's usually how it is, the seats and stuff were clean though. And if you want nicer toilets and showers Castle Mound Campground has them but that site was way more full. The location is great to branch out and do things in Black River Falls, up by Lake Arbutus, Levis/Trow and others. You can see tons of stars by the beach near the campground on clear nights.
Despite mixed reviews, we had a wonderful time here! We took our 2 year old for 3 nights, 4 days over a long weekend mid-August. It wasn't busy, site was clean, the beach was close with a playground and walking trail, and the bugs were minimal. It is a RUSTIC campground. No showers and volt toilets are standard for that. Pros: playground, beach, trails, firewood on site, clean, campsites aren't too close together. Cons: the water was brown from the pump probably ‍ safe to drink but we didn't!, As mentioned, hours when there was a ranger was odd so firewood was hard to get at times we made sure to get it when we could. The sites are close to the road and atv trail so it was loud at times. I would definitely go back personally. Animals DO NEED TO BE LEASHED at all times.
Lots of spots to camp , nice layout… not too close to other campers, ended up not staying due to it had more people staying there than we liked!! But from the drive thru the park it seemed like an alright place to stay..
Pulled in late on a Mon evening for a last minute stopover and there was only one other family camped here. It’s rustic no hookups, no dump station that I saw, but the sites were each secluded in their own little clearing, spaced for privacy. Plenty of room for my 24’ motor home. My site and several others were pull through.
Awesome place to camp! Rangers are super friendly and the campground was clean. Awesome lake and trails nearby too!
Beautiful beach, annoying ranger who would scold people for bringing their dogs too close to the water and was very rude about it.
The campground and park are pretty, but we did not have a good experience camping. The facilities were poor- vault toilets no sinks or showers, and when I tried to use the water pump, the water came out yellow. I obtained dozens 53 in total over 26 hours of mosquito bites even after spraying down with 98% DEET. We might be back to walk the trails, but we won't be back to camp.
The office was only opened periodically throughout the day with no real "open" hours which made it extremely difficult to purchase firewood. We arrived on a Thursday night around 6 pm and the firewood was locked for the rest of the night. We had to drive 40 min out to find firewood due to the bridge construction. On Friday, they were opened until 7 pm, and then on Saturday night, firewood was locked at 4 pm. Many of the campers, including us, had to scavage for our own firewood from the surrounding forest. I would never camp here again.
Two poor encounters with the d**k of a ranger who works 2nd shift. Don’t bring children who are loud and laughing and having a good time in the middle of the day. Around 2 pm he came scolding our camp for yelling. Had no idea what he was talking about - which is besides the point because quiet hours our 11 pm-6 am. We were all seated in camp chairs under a canopy quietly listening to Music. Turns out it’s the camp adjacent to ours that’s yelling - and it didn’t bother us. Dude is seriously an a**hole. Seems his only purpose is to be rude to everyone at the camp. I think his name is Dan. Makes what is actually a fairly nice campground a less than fun experience. Campers beware.
This is a great little camp ground for some rustic camping and decent fishing. Couple notes. During the week there it's no attendant in the shack. It's you need a sticker go to Castle Mound. Rustic camping means no showers. The high 200 camp sites are next to a road and a bog. Just FYI. Great for rings.
