Decided to have date night with the hubs at the Pickle Barrel Pickering location. Service in the beginning was slow but improved towards the end. We ordered the Thai cauliflower bites and French onion soup to start. The Thai bites were good and hubs said they got the French Onion Soup just right. For our main, I ordered the miso salmon which was great! Tasty, large portion. I definitely overate. Couldn’t even do dessert Hubs ordered the pesto pasta, which he enjoyed. Place was clean, a tad on the cool side tho which made it uncomfortable for me. Also didn’t care for the booth seating, which felt low, but didn’t realize that until we were seated Would we go back? Probably but not our first choice.
I visited Pickering location this Thursday. I will rate 3 start for my experience. Food was great, servings were good size and price are reasonable. However drinks are worst than any restaurant,I have ever visited. We ordered classic red wine sangria and blackberry & basil whisky smash. Both of the drinks were sweet as hell. It felt like I am driking straight sugar syrup. When we told server that drinks are extremely sweet, she smiled, nodded and walked away. Thereafter just to refresh our taste and enjoy great food, we ordered a Corona Beer. Thinking nothing can go wrong with beer. Guess what, lime on the top of bottle was rotten. Like it was lying there for last 7 nights. In short, Go for food, stay away from drinks at this location.
Came here for dinner and started with some calamari, wasnt bad but not the best I've had. Could use a bit more spice as it didn't taste like much. For my main dish I ordered their Hot Alberta Beef sandwich with fries. It had a good portion of beef with gravy all over. Very good and very filling. Highly recommend this. Overall the service was fast and friendly. Great place to go gor lunch or dinner.
A good menu variety! Family friendly with a separate kids menu. Kids menu is ordered in 4 steps: beverage, main, side, and dessert. Most of the mains were $9.99 with the exception of the teriyaki salmon which was $13.99. It has a good variety suitable for brunch/lunch and dinner. We got the salmon with caesar salad side, a milk, and the chocolate sundae for our daughter, all her picks. The salmon was slightly overdone for my standards but the portion was huge, not a half portion, and much appreciated, especially as it's from the kid's meal. The teriyaki sauce came on the same and was immediately spilled/poured everywhere by excited little fingers. My daughter 3yo even had to take home half the salmon and almost all the salad. Of course, she had room for half her sundae. It was served in a bowl about 3inches diameter but it was so shallow that everytime she scooped, ice cream would fall over the edge. It was a messy eat but a good value meal overall. Mains: 3.5/5: My husband tried the Pesto Feta Sirloin, cooked medium rare, and came with a side of beans. He added sauteed mushrooms and upgraded the potato side to loaded mashed potato. The cook was good, but the pesto sauce took away from the natural flavour of the meat instead of complement it. 5/5: I got the Lobster and Shrimp Linguine with white wine garlic cream sauce. It was cooked well, flavour was fantastic and there were large morsels of lobster and visible and unbroken claw meat. The shrimps were large and had that fresh, crisp bite. Starters: 5/5 shrimp and salad; 2/5 cream of broccoli Our steak and pasta dishes came with a starter, choice of soup, caesar, or mixed greens. We got a caesar and cream of broccoli. The caesar was well made, but the soup was disappointing. It tasted more like cream of mixed veggies, almost completely without any hint of broccoli, and heavy on potato or cornstarch to thicken. We also got a Coconut Crusted Shrimp, and confirmed the sweet Thai chili dipping sauce came on the side so our daughter could try it. It was crispy and sweet from the coconut, we all enjoyed! Service: 3.5/5 We arrived at 7pm and there were quite a number of other patrons including a large party table. The server was courteous, but service was slow. Each table appears to only have a set of 2 tableware, so when the food came my husband needed to wait to ask for another fork as my daughter was already eating. We also asked for extra napkins, knowing our daughter, but wasn't given any until the server saw the teriyaki sauce spill. Kid-friendliness: Booster seat is available, kids menu has excellent variety. Parking: Medium lot directly in front of the restaurant. It is in the same plaza as the mall and cineplex, so there is ample free public parking even if the lot directly in front of the restaurant is full.
Haven’t been to a Pickle Barrel in years and I was reminded why - food was super mediocre. Was craving pasta but menu for pastas was quite limited - ended up getting the pesto chicken fettuccine with french onion soup as the starter extra $3.49. The chicken was dry and bland
A group of six of us visited on this occasion. The staff were very friendly and helpful during our visit. The place had lots of customers but still lots of space for more. It was very clean and washrooms were well maintained and even have automatic taps, soap and dryers. The five different Minu items we purchased was excellent, hot and tasty. We had no situations during our visit.
I was into the Pickering location with some friends on May 18/22 for lunch & had the Fiesta Bowl with Shrimp. Description says it was supposed to have Chipotle sauce & cheeses & I gotta say although it was pretty good, I certainly didn't taste any chipotle & I didn't see or taste very much of the cheese.
6 people went for the dinner around 7.30 pm. All dishes were good not the best. I am giving 2 star only because our server did not pay any attention to us after dinner was served at all, not to ask even for drink refills. Place was virtually empty and not that he was busy serving others. He disappeared for long and when he came with bill, he stink with strong smoking smell making us very uncomfortable. We will not go back again.
Food was decent and tasty, feel like we got our money’s worth from it. The service, however, wasn’t really up to scratch. We were pleasantly greeted by the hostess, but our server was not particularly welcoming or friendly. They weren’t particularly unfriendly, but a smile goes a long, long way to make you feel valued, and we didn’t see a single smile. Being a little gruff in nature also didn’t contribute towards a welcoming atmosphere. But alas, I realise that some people don’t mean to come across this way, but are naturally disinclined to appearing merry for the sake of it. What I did have a little more issue with, however, was that our mains arrived when I was halfway through eating my appetiser, without acknowledgement of the fact and with very prompt communication. Needless to say, my burger wasn’t hot when I got to it and we felt rushed. Side note: I’m from the UK where this is NOT normal nor considered acceptable. Is this not as frowned upon in Canada? The other problem we had was that my partner’s americano arrived in what I can only assume is a latte glass. She had to leave it for up to 10 minutes just to cool down before she could pick the glass up - no handle. To make matters worse, it was still dirty: you could clearly see the foam from a previous latte stained on the top half of the glass. Not impressed! The food, however, was great.
This was my first time back post pandemic for dine in and absolutely loved the experience. We ordered crispy calamari, the lobster linguine and fish and chips. The food was excellent and absolutely loved it. The linguine in particular was so good. The friendly staff served a nice chilled sapporo to go with this. The only complaint is the portion size of the calamari was a little less for the price. But overall a lovely experience! Highly recommend.
