Pacific Central Station

Story

Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is a railway station which acts as the western terminus of Via Rail's cross-country The Canadian to Toronto and the northern terminus of Amtrak’s Cascades to Seattle and Portland. The station also provides intercity coach service, being the head office and bus depot of Pacific Coach Lines and the main Vancouver terminal for Greyhound Canada. The station is wheelchair-accessible and is staffed with full Via services. The Amtrak Cascades provides two daily round trips from Vancouver. One goes to Seattle, Washington; the other continues on to Portland, Oregon. Rather than stopping for an immigration inspection at the border, as happens with the Adirondack to Montreal and Maple Leaf to Toronto, Amtrak passengers go through Canadian customs at the station upon arrival. Passengers bound for the United States go through United States border preclearance prior to boarding in Vancouver.

My rating is purely from that of a “tourist spot” for photographs and such and not from the point of view of its utility as a train and transit station. I think the architecture of this building is beautiful. Inside, the ceiling is quite lovely as well. That said, the building seems to be falling into a state of disrepair. Once-thriving businesses are closed and boarded up. The lighting is all wrong. They used cold-white lighting bulbs which most might agree never do wonders for art and atmosphere. The inside really ought to be lit with warm white lighting to better showcase the old ceiling artwork & architecture.
Great spacious terminal. There are a couple places to grab food inside the terminal.nThere’s a water fountain.nThe restroom for males is not clean and 2 of 3 urinaries are clogged.nDic 2024.
Pacific Central Station it's one of the historic buildings in the city of Vancouver more than 100 years old It was built nicely and kept with stone architecture.nOriginally was built for Canadian railways and right now it's servicing via Ray Canada Amtrak rail from us Plus Greyhound and Bolt Buses so whether you traveling by train or with any bus company this is the location for getting in or dropping off at the end of your destination in Vancouver.nIt's a very clean place and the staff is very friendly and helpful to all visitors.
Came here for the early morning Amtrak Cascades train #517 heading south towards Seattle, WA and Portland, OR. Station is clean, spacious, and organized. Arrived an hour prior to departure with boarding starting about 45 minutes before departure. There didn't seem many stores open that early, but I didn't walk around.nnPersonnel were nice and friendly. Going through customs was fast and easy. From time the boarding started, I was in my seat within 10 minutes. Was an easy and simple process boarding a train here.
It might not be the worst station in the World. but it is easily in the bottom five! The building itself is nice and historic, but there are no platforms, no cover in a city that receives in excess of 1400mm of rain annually and the whole place is disorganized and badly signposted. We had to get off the train from Seattle with our 87 year-old mother and get her down from the train onto a small wiggly little step thing, then wait in the rain in a queue next to the train that looks like an run-down alley to get through passport control. The Amtrak experience was fine and the people were courteous, but the station itself is horrible. It really does not leave the impression that Vancouver is a World class city!
