Osgoode Hall Restaurant

Story

Osgoode Hall is a landmark building in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The original -storey building was started in 1829 and finished in 1832 from a design by John Ewart and W. W. Baldwin. The structure was named after William Osgoode, the first Chief Justice of Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario). It originally served to house the regulatory body for lawyers in Ontario along with its law school (formally established as Osgoode Hall Law School in 1889) which was the only recognized professional law school for the province at the time. It was constructed between 1829 and 1832 in the late Georgian Palladian and Neoclassical styles. It currently houses the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Divisional Court of the Superior Court of Justice, the offices of The Law Society of Upper Canada and the Great Law Library.HistoryThe six-acre site at the corner of Lot Street and College Avenue was acquired by the Law Society in 1828. At the time, the location was on the northwest edge of the city, which has since grown around the building. It was originally bounded on its north side by Osgoode Street, and on its east side by a street that would eventually be known as Chestnut Street. The former no longer exists, and the latter now stops at Armoury Street as Nathan Phillips Square now lies to the east. The portico of Osgoode Hall's east wing was built at the head of Toronto's York Street to serve as a terminating vista, though it is now obscured by trees planted on the building's lawn.

Toronto's secret lunch spot, this superlative restaurant in Osgoode Hall serves up excellent food from 12 to 2, weekdays only, closed during the summer. You'll have to go through airport -style security (leave your pocket knife at home) and follow a maze of halls to find the place, but it's worth the hassle. The airy room is lined with law books and soaring stained glass windows. Many of the other diners at the white-covered tables are lawyers in the robes: it feels like a private club, but one that welcomes the public. The food is excellent and very well-priced for such high quality. Service is professional and genteel. Prix-fixe three course lunch especially recommended. Call ahead for reservations. Wheelchair accessible.

The restaurant is difficult to get to. You need to go through security as well (I'm not a member so maybe there are different rules). The restaurant is on the second floor. The dining room has high ceilings and is really cool bookshelves / law books along the walls as decoration. I ordered the steak with fries, medium rare. But it came medium well. Also, it comes with A LOT of fries. I didn't love my meal. I sent it back since it was way to cooked for my preference (and not what I ordered). It came back slightly better so I am very grateful / pleased that they did not make a big fuss and offered to make a new one for me! That was very lovely service. Although the service is great, the food comes out in a reasonable amount of time... but the actual food itself is keeping me from coming back again.

Very quaint as there is no view to the beautiful grounds. A pleasant find however. The staff and menu were a pleasure. Recommended.

Came here for a work lunch. Great service and the food was delicious. I ordered the Goossens farm rainbow trout which was great. This place is tucked away in the law society of Upper Canada building and very much open to the public.

I've eaten at the Osgoode Hall Restaurant several times. Usually a good place to eat if you have been at the Great Library. The atmosphere is that of Hogwarts School's cafeteria, although instead of wizards, it's judges and lawyers mostly that eat at the Osgoode Hall Restaurant. The food is five star and the desert is recommended is their butter tart. Absolutely fantastic food and service. - A Richard Trus review
