Orient Restaurant

I''m not sure what these negative reviews are all about. For basic American-style Chinese food, this is the best I've ever had. Of course it's not a high-end "authentic" Chinese food place (whatever that is). But for less than $10, you get a lunch complete with soup, won-ton chips, and a generously-portioned meal. I ate here two days in a row and enjoyed it both times. Plus, the staff was very friendly.

The lunch special is a good value, but lunch seems to be the best time to go there - best service, food, etc. Dinner could be improved. I personally like the twice sauteed pork and the dried tofu and pork with scallions. I don't typically order the lo-mein and fried rice from here; prefer the one at Oriental Wok Express. If you are from the suburbs or a large city and you are expecting PF Chang-style American Chinese food, then you will be sorely disappointed. Oriental Wok Express at the Jolley gas station is highly recommended for those looking to order from a "secret" authentic dishes menu.

I hate to write a negative review of the Orient, because I've ordered department lunches from there many times, and the food and service are usually excellent. However, when I placed the order for our lunch delivery yesterday, the person on the phone refused to label the food containers for us as they normally have done. Today's lunch was for 20+ people, and it makes setup very difficult if there is no indication of what is in each container. In an informal setting for just a few people, this would not be a big deal, but today, it was a hassle. I regret to say that we will not be ordering for large parties from the Orient in the future.

First off, if you want the best authentic Chinese food in this area, you should go to Orient Wok Express (and order off their authentic Chinese menu). If you want sit down Chinese food though, The Orient is a decent option. The Orient is a bit of a toss-up. It's the main token Chinese restaurant in town, and is generally pretty good --- except when it's not. My mother got incredibly sick after eating here once (though I've eaten here quite a bit with no incident). It's very typical American Chinese food, but it's done pretty well. There's a nice atmosphere, and lots of seating. If you want really good authentic Chinese food though, I'd recommend going to Orient Wok Express.
