Outstanding history and exhibits. Matt was awesome and so friendly. The gift shop has so many awesome Syracuse things. Worth the visit.
Had a great time visiting this museum. Enormous educational materials, and I found the projector show on the underground railroad to be very informational. Matt is very helpful. Definitely an underrated gemVisited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Stopped here after getting jerk chicken from Jamaica Cuse, a few blocks away. Friendly staff and pretty rad things to see there. When you visit the gift shop, be sure to pay $30 and become a member. You'll get their publications mailed to you and have a discount when you shop for friends and family at the holidays. They've got some pretty rad Salt City shirts and puzzles and toys and books for kiddos.
Have visited several times in the past couple years and greatly enjoyed every one. The museum is interesting and informative, well put together. The staff are friendly though it is largely self-guided. Also highly recommend emailing and scheduling an appointment at the research center if you have any local history questions-- they are very helpful and have a vast collection to draw on.
Great place to have fun and learn about the amazing history in Onondaga County. I have lived here my whole life and never had any idea of the monumental things that happened here. Things they don't teach in school, but should. Give yourself some time to soak it all in. Also they let you take photos so you can share. Two floors to explore. Also on the 100 Things To Do In Syracuse Before You Die. So cross one off your list and check out this gem of a museum in our own backyard. Also they have a fantastic research center if you want to learn more.
Really great museum downtown that I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of before stumbling across it on a whim. The place is really big and well curated - we spent nearly two hours there and still went pretty quick through a couple exhibits to beat the parking meter. I was really impressed with their collection here and the information available for each piece. I'll definitely go again and recommend it for anyone from the county or just visiting.
The OHA has a ton of information about Syracuse and the Onondaga area. They have information on slavery, Syracuse china, and salt production just to name a few. There are two floors of exhibits and a small gift shop. There are no tickets to buy but they take donations with a suggestion of $3 a person. It is a place to visit to learn about the local history of Syracuse and the Onondaga area.
We really enjoyed our visit today. The stained glass exhibit was lovely. The Salina st exhibit was great too. The museum is well laid out, roomy with good signage. The exhibits are well cared for and the staff are very friendly.
The Onondaga Historical Association was very immersive and allowed for me to discover all the amazing stories and objects and my own pace. The staff were very nice and were always happy to answer questions. There is something for everyone and overall it was a very memorable experience.
It is always worth a visit if you are a history buff or just curious about the way things were or how things got to how they are now. The museum is a great depository of artifacts that are expertly curated to tell a story of one of the continent's most historically significance areas. Because of the vastness of their collection, new exhibits, telling different stories, are often cycled onto display. Their reference library is filled with locally significant resources that often are not available through online sources. A must visit for those researching their family history or the history of the place they now occupy. Bring whole family. It is kid friendly for the well behaved and adult intriguing for the knowledge seeking purveyor of time.
