Oaklawn Farm Zoo

Story

The Oaklawn Farm Zoo is a zoo located in Aylesford, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was opened in 1984, and is family-owned and operated by Ron and Gail Rogerson. The zoo boasts the largest display of Big Cats and Primates in Eastern Canada. The 50acre zoo is in a rural setting in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, and includes a wide diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles. As Nova Scotia’s largest zoo, Oaklawn has a large variety of endangered and threatened species of exotic, native and domestic breeds of animals. Children can feed corn to some of the animals (notably the deer and goats) and the zoo has a restaurant and gift shop. Feeding time for the big cats and bears is a popular zoo attraction. Owner Gail Rogerson enters the cages of these animals and will hand feed them meat that is collected from local farms and surrounding areas. The zoo is open Easter weekend through November, and closed to the public during the winter.OriginRon and Gail Rogerson started a farm in the 1970s with conventional animals and some exotic animals. Schools went on field trips to the farm to learn about the animals by 1975. A program known as “Learning to Live” started in 1980 which allowed children to get experience with how to take care of animals. In 1984 the farm decided to open as a zoo and incorporated many new animals into the facility.

Great experience to share with kids of all ages. Printed off the question sheets they kindly posted on their website (resource section) and we had fun answering them while we waited for our meal at a nearby restaurant in Coldbrook after. Inexpensive entry for a family as long as you don't buy the cute stuffed Toys before you leave. ;) Opportunity to feed a bear and watch lions getting fed if you hit supper hour - definitely a unique experience and worth timing your visit around.

A Fantastic place for a day out. Very friendly staff. They show real care for all the animals. It's big enough to have some good exhibits but small enough to feel very personal. The owner is always walking around with her pugs and very happy to speak to you.

Nice spot to see a wide range of animals for a reasonable price. Lots of parking, family washrooms & picnic tables throughout. A little canteen with ice cream at the entrance and a big grassy spot for the kids to run around. Gift shop and reptile room at admission. Some shade, but the animals are less active on a hot day. Regular animals and a few new ones, the animals are native to all over the world. There are a few machines with corn to feed the deer, etc. The bathrooms a nice and spacious (a stroller can easily fit into all washrooms) but it would be nice if there were a few more elsewhere in the park.

Four 🌟 simply because there's no place to have a bite to eat with the kids in a cooler place. Way too hot to stay longer. But I will be going again as soon as the weather is cooler. Lots of things to see and a good selection of animals.

Definitely worth checking out, not very big though. Have a wide variety of animals, some are hard to see, however, some you can be in the cage with to pet. Wish there were more corn machines around to buy feed for the animals though. Bring lots of quarters! Nice place, just small!
