The server was not really interested in us. The food was ok but the kung po chicken was really heavy with inedible dried red chilli in large cunks as you can see in the image. This after I had eaten every scrap of chicken. Don't bother
Opened almost always every day, even snow storms. Lots of foods are spicy. Seasonal special menu posted on windows are Chinese only.
Our experience was mediocre. We ordered the sizzling udon with shrimp in black pepper sauce, the sizzling udon with beef in black pepper sauce, and spring rolls. The food was rather bland, I can’t say the quality justified the price, but the portions were fair.
This place is amazing y’all. It feels very special to have delicious Chinese food like this here in Kingston. I lived in Beijing until I was 17, and whenever I miss hanging on the side of the road with my friends and eating some yang rou chuar lamb skewers, I go to Northern Chinese BBQ for a taste of my childhood. I live away from Kingston now, and whenever I’m in town visiting family, this place is my first stop! After seeing my family, of course!
Authentic Chinese Restaurant with a HUGE menu. The menu is so comprehensive it is truly surprising that they are able to do this. The restaurant is another welcoming addition to the competitive food scene in Kingston downtown area. Unlike some other restaurants, this restaurant has no hidden "Chinese only" menu. You get the same menu as what Mandarin speaking Chinese people get, which is indicative of the confidence in their dishes. Even though the name of the restaurant is Northern Chinese Barbecue, the reality is their menu includes iconic dishes from all over China and include many items that are not barbecue related. For Chinese food aficionados, checking out their menu, which is on their website is a must before going to the restaurant, because you may spend quite awhile studying the entire menu all 15 pages of it not including drinks. For those of you who like to have a beer or wine with your Chinese food, for now, you are out of luck. Choose from many fulfilling and inexpensive dishes as well as fancy and exotic dishes. Your bill may be as low as single digit or as high as three digits depending on what you order. Service is decent, mostly college/university students, typical of other Chinese restaurants in the area, there are no cheeky uniforms, but having something classy could improve the sense of identity of the restaurant. It is obvious the restaurant is still relatively new as the interior decor is somewhat lacking and the overall atmosphere has room to improve still. What matters most to this reviewer is , first and foremost, the taste of the dishes. While I haven't sampled every single item on their vast menu, I can attest to the fact that the few items I did try, tasted authentic and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended whether for a quick bite during lunch or a family feast reservation highly recommended.
I really love coming here when I'm in Kingston. It is one of the few spots you can hit up for really delicious Northern-style cuisine. I got the Double Cooked Sweet and Sour Pork, the Fish Fillet and Lamb in Hot Chili Oil, and BBQ Chicken Gristle cartilage. Food here was delivered in big portions. The deep fried pork was glistening with a sweet glaze and were really delicious. It was crunchy, sweet, and savoury. The hot pot had generous amounts of lamb and fish. I liked how tender the meat was and the spiciness of the soup broth. The chicken gristle was served on a skewer and dusted with cumin and other spices. They were super addicting to eat.
Authentic Chinese experience, from the taste of the food to the questionable hygiene. In general, the food here is good but overpriced. The best thing on the menu is the Grand Marnier shrimp.
I cannot stress this enough: LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS!!! As reviewers often say, “if I could give this a zero, I would”. On the off chance of some of those reviews being a fluke, and since I decided to do takeout, I said “why not” only to find myself angry with that decision. We ordered chicken fried rice and fried noodle with shrimp, pork, and vegetables and wow…. that sounded good at the time, but now I just feel sick. Literally. The rice wasn’t awful… just something I could very well make at home. The flavours were non-existent and it lacked authenticity. Having higher hopes for the noodles with more colour, we tried it and were more frustrated. The noodles were oily with NO flavour at all, not just lacking. My family visits Kingston often and I live here, and can confidently say that we all will not be returning.
I would not say their barbecue tastes good but the rest of the dishes are well done! HUGE portion and taste authentic. Kind of pricey and sometimes minor hygiene issue.
Not my best experience of Chinese cuisine. Portions are big but too expensive for the way they taste. The staff was very friendly, which was the most positive about this place.
