North Bay Memorial Gardens Sports Arena

Story

The North Bay Memorial Gardens is an arena located in North Bay, Ontario. It was built in 1955 and has a capacity of 4,043. The Gardens hosted the North Bay Centennials ice hockey team from 1982 to 2002, before they moved to Saginaw, Michigan. The arena's primary tenants today are the North Bay Battalion of the OHL and the Nipissing Lakers men's ice hockey team of the OUA.In 2007 Memorial Gardens played host to the Atlanta Thrashers and New York Islanders for a pre-season game after the city of North Bay was crowned as Hockeyville. The City and the Committee that brought Hockeyville to North Bay used the prize money to put up a new electronic rink sign. The arena underwent a $12 million renovation for the new OHL franchise, the North Bay Battalion's arrival for the 2013-2014 season, also signing a 15-year lease with the arena. As part of the renovations, the seating capacity was increased, the ice surface was reconfigured to new OHL standards, 10 private boxes were added as well as a new 2-level team dressing room. The renovations were first 600 thousand dollars over budget even though promises where made to cut the renovations if it went over the 12 million dollar mark by local government who ended up making special funds out of reserve to pay the cost overruns. Six weeks later a further $4.5 million was announced as spent on the project without the knowledge of local government from city taxpayers accounts, with an audit being called that later revealed little paper work and no communication of costs were done on the city's largest municipal project.

Haven't been here in years other than for craft shows, so this was the first time we got to see closer up all the renovations that took place a few years ago. New seating, sound system, scoreboard and clocks, jumbo-tron, etc. Very nice. We went to see the first ever Black Creek Rodeo. It was very well put on and entertaining. Had a great time.
I saw a review saying the ticket and food prices are too high, I don't think that's necessarily true. Battalion tickets are reasonably priced and the food isn't expensive even compared to going to the movie theatre. Memorial Gardens is a great place to watch hockey, skate or see other events like the Black Creek Rodeo who came to town for the Stampede. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. My only complaint would be bathroom cleanliness and the service at the concessions. Both of those are staff issues, which tells me management needs to be on their people to offer good customer service and check on the bathrooms more frequently.
The Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday not in the summers though noon public skating is a great way to get exercise without suffering out in the cold. The group of regular skaters that attend are so welcoming. Plus, it’s less than $4 a person! If you’re thinking about attending, don’t hesitate!
It is a good place for events and activities to attend with family and friends, it is friendly with children and you can find some snacks too. We attended a Hockey game that was super fun and there was a lot of excitement and a good atmosphere in the place. Parking is free, but you should arrive early to find a spot easily.
Always enjoy visiting this area. The atmosphere of the arena and the noise of the crowd makes this a great spot to watch the Battalion play hockey. As a season ticket holder I appreciate the free parking. Would rank this arena 5 stars but the seats are squished in and can be tight for taller or bigger people. The concession areas can be quite packed and hard to walk around when crowds are large.
